The women's 400-meter freestyle relay secured the gold and a world record of 3:39.46. Entering Wednesday's action in which 12 gold medals are at stake, the USA leads the medal count with 16 (four gold). DREAM TEAM BACK IN ACTION: Summer Sanders and Crissy Ahmann-Leighton Wednesday go for a 1-2 sweep in the 100-meter butterfly; basketball's Dream Team returns to action against Germany, and the baseball team meets Cuba. World champ Kent Ferguson and Mark Lenzi are in the springboard diving finals. Boxers Julian Wheeler (125 pounds) and Montell Griffin (178) hope to keep the U.S. unbeaten streak (6-0) alive. TRADING DEADLINE APPROACHING: Telephone lines will be buzzing the next three days as baseball's general managers try to beat Friday's trading deadline. Among factors: Clubs might elect to trade many would-be premier free agents, such as Chicago's Greg Maddux, now rather than lose them later. In reality, the deadline is mythical. Clubs have until Aug. 31 to complete rosters for postseason play. PERRY HAS SUITORS: Chicago Bears defensive tackle and training camp holdout William Perry soon could be out of Chicago. Perry's agent, Jim Steiner, said Tuesday two NFL teams have strong interest in Perry. Perry has refused to be weighed or take a physical until the Bears sign him. Bears coach Mike Ditka mandated Perry weigh no more than 320 pounds when he reported to camp, but Perry skipped that date Thursday. This article is copyright 1992 Gannett News Service.
