Buckley, the fifth player picked in the NFL draft, signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves. He'll join their Instructional League team in mid-September if he's not playing football. The Florida State product will play outfield and second base. RECORD FALLS IN ZURICH: Moses Kiptanui continued setting records Wednesday with a world mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Weltklasse meet in Zurich, Switzerland. Kiptanui's time of 8 minutes, 2.08 seconds breaks the 1989 record of 8:05.35 by fellow Kenyan Peter Koech. Also, Carl Lewis won the 100 meters in 10.07; Gail Devers won the 100 hurdles and was fourth in the 100; Gwen Torrence won the 100. ESPN'S COOK PICKS NOTRE DAME: USA TODAY columnist Michael Hiestand reports that ESPN analyst Beano Cook doesn't just pick Notre Dame to win the college football national championship this year. Says Cook: "If they played on Sundays, they might just go 9-7, and they could at least win the AFC Central division."
