COUPLES, LOVE RESUME BATTLE:
   In one of their last meetings of 1992, Fred Couples and Davis 
Love III resume their battle for the PGA Tour money title Thursday 
in the NEC World Series in Akron, Ohio. Couples, the leader since 
March, is $57,609 ahead of Love. But with $252,000 to the winner, 
a whole lot of shuffling will be going on. Historic 7,149-yard, 
par-70 Firestone is hard and firm.
    
STOTTLEMYRE THROWS ONE-HITTER:
   Todd Stottlemyre pitched 7 1:3 no-hit innings and wound up with 
a one-hitter as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 
9-0 on Wednesday night. In other American League games: Boston 2, 
Oakland 1, 10 innings; Minnesota 1, Detroit 0; New York 4, 
Milwaukee 3; Texas 3, Kansas City 1; Baltimore 6, California 4; 
Cleveland 6, Seattle 3, 10 innings.
    
TWINS OWNER NOT WORRIED:
   Minnesota Twins owner Carl Pohlad, a prominent banker, said 
Wednesday he was not concerned by a report that banks will not 
extend major league clubs an additional $140 million line of 
credit because of attempts to remove Commissioner Fay Vincent. 
"Banks make loans based on facts, not personalities," Pohlad said.
