MAJORS NEED NEW COMMISSIONER:
   Major League Baseball's 10-member executive council took 
control of the game Monday after Commissioner Fay Vincent's 
resignation. First task: Search for a new commissioner. The 
council meets Tuesday via a conference call. There is a regular 
owners meeting Wednesday in St. Louis. Vincent will be paid his 
$650,000 annual salary until his contract expires March 31, 1994.
    
COLTS RELEASE HERRMANN:
   Veteran quarterback Mark Herrmann, who led the Indianapolis 
Colts to their first season-opening win in nine years, was 
released Monday to make room for Jack Trudeau. "You can't find 
anything in life any colder than this," said Herrmann, 33, who 
helped in a 14-3 win over Cleveland. Trudeau held out until late 
in preseason. Starter Jeff George will miss another game with a 
strained thumb.
    
COURIER KNOCKS OUT MCENROE:
   Top seed Jim Courier ousted John McEnroe in a breeze Monday, 
6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) in the fourth round of the U.S. Open in 
Flushing Meadows, N.Y. But No. 3 Pete Sampras had to struggle to 
get past Frenchman Guy Forget, 6-3, 1-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. In women's 
fourth-round action, No. 2 Steffi Graf and No. 5 Arantxa Sanchez 
Vicario advanced. Tuesday, Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl meet.
