JURY RULES IN FAVOR OF PLAYERS:
   More legal maneuvering and posturing may be the result from the 
NFL trial. The Minneapolis jury of eight women ruled the NFL's 
Plan B system of protecting 37 players a year violates anti-trust 
rules because it is too restrictive. But it agreed the system 
contributed to competitive balance among teams, a proviso the NFL 
says affirms the need for some sort of system.
    
EDBERG, LENDL RAINED OUT:
   No. 2 Stefan Edberg led No. 9 seed Ivan Lendl 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 
5-7, 2-1 Thursday when play was suspended for rain in the men's 
quarterfinals at the U.S. Open. No. 4 Michael Chang beat No. 12 
Wayne Ferreira to move into the semifinals. Friday, No. 1 Monica 
Seles plays No. 7 Mary Joe Fernandez, and No. 5 Arantxa Sanchez 
Vicario plays No. 9 Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere in the semifinals.
    
MICHIGAN MEETS NOTRE DAME:
   The stakes in college football rise considerably this weekend 
with several early tests of strength Saturday. No. 5 Michigan 
takes quarterback Elvis Grbac and the rest of a talent-laden 
backfield to No. 3 Notre Dame. No. 4 Florida State plays at No. 14 
Clemson. And No. 17 Tennessee, an impressive winner in interim 
coach Phil Fulmer's debut, meets No. 15 Georgia.
