EDBERG WINS OPEN, TAKES NO. 1:
   Defending champion Stefan Edberg, who cleared hurdle after 
hurdle at the U.S. Open, made a final leap across the net Sunday, 
landing back in the winner's circle and back atop the ATP computer 
rankings. No. 2 seed Edberg shot down No. 3 Pete Sampras 3-6, 6-4, 
7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the final. Sampras had left the court Saturday, 
after defeating Jim Courier, with stomach cramps.
    
MIAMI REMAINS NUMBER ONE:
   Miami held on to its hold of the top spot in this week's USA 
TODAY:CNN college football poll. The Hurricanes were idle this 
weekend and got 1,486 votes. Washington beat Wisconsin 27-10 and 
stayed at No. 2 with 1,437 points. Florida State moved up one to 
No. 3, Florida is fourth and Texas A&M is fifth. Rounding out the 
top 10 are: Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Alabama and 
Syracuse.
