MIAMI STAYS ON TOP:
   Miami (3-0) breezed through a 38-0 rout of Florida A&M and kept 
the top spot in the USA TODAY:CNN college football poll. 
Washington (3-0) stayed at No. 2 with its 17th straight win. 
Florida State stayed at No. 3, while Texas A&M moved from No. 5 to 
No. 4 and Michigan moved up one to No. 5. Rounding out the top 10: 
Notre Dame, Penn State, Alabama, Tennessee and Colorado.
    
GAMBLING RING INVESTIGATED:
   Federal investigators are exploring allegations that the owners 
of a $1 billion-a-year telephone gambling ring fixed results of 
horse races and college sports, including paying off a referee, 
according to Sunday's San Francisco Examiner. The operation was 
run by Ronald Sacco, a former San Francisco man with alleged ties 
to organized crime, according to court papers cited in the story.
    
MAGIC DECISION WILL COME SOON:
   Magic Johnson says he'll "probably" decide within two weeks if 
he'll come out of retirement to play for the Los Angeles Lakers. 
He scored 32 points to lead the blue team to a 147-132 victory 
against the white team in his annual Midsummer's Night Magic 
all-star charity game at Inglewood, Calif.
