Phoenix, Seattle, San Diego and the Los Angeles Raiders all wanted Slaughter. He had 305 catches in six seasons with Cleveland. Also, Detroit gave up its rights to running back D.J. Dozier, the only unsigned free agent. HUGE LEMIEUX DEAL QUESTIONED: Pittsburgh Penguins star Mario Lemieux may be close to signing a seven-year, $42 million contract. The Associated Press reported that Lemieux told a Montreal radio station Monday he would sign for that amount. Lemieux's agent, Tom Reich, said the deal was "still up in the air." If the figure is accurate, he will get $2.5 million more than NHL salary leader Philadelphia's Eric Lindros.
