The homer wiped out Toronto's 3-run comeback. Mark McGwire and Terry Steinbach hit consecutive home runs in the second inning to give the A's an early 3-0 lead. Game 2 is Thursday at 8:30 p.m., again in Toronto. BRAVES BLOW AWAY PIRATES: The postseason is threatening a quick post mortem for the Pittsburgh Pirates after the Atlanta Braves won 13-5 Wednesday to take a 2-0 lead in the National League Championship Series. The Nos. 2-5 hitters in the Pirates lineup - Jay Bell, Andy Van Slyke, Barry Bonds and Jeff King - have four hits among them. The No. 8 hitter in the Atlanta lineup - Mark Lemke - has five. LIGHTNING LIGHTS UP BLACKHAWKS: After a glitzy pre-game laser and fireworks show, the expansion Tampa Bay Lightning produced a more dazzling display in a 7-3 opening-game victory against the Chicago Blackhawks. Journeyman player Chris Kontos scored four goals in helping Tampa Bay become the first National Hockey League expansion team since the 1972 Atlanta Flames to win its first game. ZIEGLER JOINS TIGERS: John Ziegler was named an adviser for the Detroit Tigers Wednesday, a little more than a week after vacating his job as National Hockey League president after 15 years. Ziegler, who resigned in June, will return to his Detroit law firm Dec. 1.
