The series is tied 1-1; it resumes Saturday in Oakland. The Blue Jays ended a four-game ALCS losing streak. Cone allowed five hits and one run in eight innings. Toronto's Kelly Gruber provided the offense, hitting a two-run home run in the fifth inning. PIRATES GO WITH ROOKIE: Much of the spotlight Friday night in Pittsburgh will be on Tim Wakefield, a rookie knuckleballer whom the Pirates hope will start their climb back from two down in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series against the Altanta Braves. Called up July 31, he finished with an 8-1 record and a 2.15 ERA. He'll go against Tom Glavine (20-8), in the running to win the Cy Young. WIN COULD PUT MIAMI IN FIRST: Two heavyweights of college football square off Saturday: No. 2 Miami (Fla.) at No. 5 Penn State. If Miami wins, coach Dennis Erickson says, "We will talk about the polls." The Hurricanes will have beaten Florida State and Penn State back-to-back and will lobby for a move past Washington back to No. 1. Washington is playing its fourth consecutive home game, vs. No. 23 California. EAGLES MEET CHIEFS: The Philadelphia Eagles (4-0) and Kansas City Chiefs (3-2) meet Sunday for the first time during the regular season in more than 20 years. The NFL's other unbeaten team, Miami (4-0), plays at home against Atlanta (2-3).
