PIRATES BOMBARD BRAVES 7-1:
   Bob Walk was not prepared to let the Pittsburgh Pirates become 
three-time playoff losers. Walk threw a three-hitter and the 
Pirates clobbered the Atlanta Braves 7-1 Sunday to stay alive and 
send the National League series back to Atlanta. Pittsburgh's 
record four first-inning doubles routed Steve Avery.
    
BLUE JAYS GET INSPIRED:
   The Toronto Blue Jays got all the motivation they needed Sunday 
from Oakland's bullpen ace Dennis Eckersley, who tauntingly pumped 
his fist when the A's led 6-4 in the ninth inning. Then the Blue 
Jays got a two-run homer from Roberto Alomar, and tough relief 
pitching. In the end, they got a 7-6 victory in 11 innings that 
left them one victory away from bringing a World Series to Canada.
    
MIAMI SLIPS PAST WASHINGTON:
   Miami and Washington share the top of the major polls this 
week. In the USA TODAY:CNN coaches' rankings: Miami got two more 
first-place votes, but landed at No. 1 by one point. In the 
Associated Press media poll: Washington remained No. 1 by a 
one-point margin. Rounding out the USA TODAY:CNN top 10: Michigan; 
Texas A&M; Alabama; Florida State; Colorado; Nebraska; Penn State; 
Stanford.
