MTOLO RETURNS WITH NEW YORK WIN:
   Willie Mtolo came on strong and Lisa Ondieki came on early in 
Sunday's 23rd New York City Marathon. Mtolo, a South African 
prevented from competing internationally until May because of 
sanctions against apartheid, won the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours, 9 
minutes, 29 seconds, in the field of about 25,000. Ondieki of 
Australia won the women's race in a course-record 2:24:40.
    
CANES HOLD ON TO NO. 1:
   Miami held on to its spot on top of the USA TODAY:CNN college 
football rankings. The Hurricanes beat West Virginia 35-23 and got 
one more point than No. 2 Washington in the poll. No. 3 Alabama 
and No. 4 Michigan switched places in the poll and Texas A&M 
stayed at No. 5. Rounding out the top 10: Florida State, Nebraska, 
Notre Dame and a tie between Boston College and Syracuse for No. 
9.
    
ELLIOTT DROPS IN CUP RACE:
   Bill Elliott might have seen his Winston Cup championship hopes 
go up in smoke Sunday in the Arizona desert. Elliott's mechanical 
mishap, plus Davey Allison's Pyroil 500 win and a fourth by Alan 
Kulwicki, scrambled the NASCAR title chase entering the Nov. 15 
finale at Atlanta. Elliott's 31st finish at Phoenix International 
Raceway dropped him 40 points behind Allison.
    
AZINGER PUTTS TO TOUR TITLE:
   Paul Azinger is back among the PGA Tour elite after winning the 
$2 million Tour Championship by three shots Sunday. Azinger used 
an eagle on the 16th hole to pull away to a three-shot win against 
Corey Pavin and Lee Janzen, who shot 68-279. With the $360,000 
first prize, he soared from 21st to seventh on the final money 
list ($929,863). Fred Couples clinched Player of the Year honors.
