SHOWDOWN TO SWEETEN SUGAR BOWL:
   Washington's weekend loss at Arizona is steering college 
football toward its first No. 1-No. 2 showdown for the national 
title in five years, in the USF&G Sugar Bowl. Erase the Huskies 
from the picture. Set Miami (Fla.) solidly atop the polls. And 
move Alabama to No. 2. If the regular season ends that way, the 
new bowl coalition will match them in the Jan. 1 Sugar.
    
TAYLOR MAY HAVE ENDED CAREER:
   An era of defensive pressure - and quarterback terror - 
apparently ended Sunday, when New York Giants linebacker Lawrence 
Taylor ruptured his right Achilles' tendon in a 27-7 win over the 
Green Bay Packers. The 33-year-old Taylor, NFL career sack leader 
with 126 1:2, already had said he would retire after this season, 
his 12th. Surgery is Tuesday; recovery could take five months.
    
THREE MORE BECOME FREE AGENTS:
   Three baseball players filed for free agency Sunday, the last 
day to file, bringing the total to a record 153. Filing were 
Milwaukee outfielder Robin Yount, Philadelphia outfielder Dale 
Murphy and New York Yankees reliever Steve Howe, who is suspended 
because of drug violations. Monday is the deadline for teams to 
file protected lists for the Nov. 17 expansion draft.
