DUKE REPEATS AS NCAA CHAMP:
   Duke pulled away from Michigan in the second half to claim 
their second straight NCAA basketball national championship with a 
71-51 win. Duke became the first team to win back-to-back titles 
since UCLA in 1973. The Blue Devils' second-half charge was led by 
Christian Laettner, who scored 14 of his 19 points after halftime. 
Duke scored 23 of the game's final 29 points.
    
BASEBALL BACK IN ACTION:
   Baseball opened a new season Monday with a new stadium - Oriole 
Park at Camden Yards - and familiar names pitching their new teams 
to victories. In Baltimore, Rick Sutcliffe struck out six to post 
his 17th career shutout in a 2-0 win over Cleveland. In Detroit, 
Jack Morris became the all-time leader in consecutive opening-day 
starts with his 13th in a 4-2 win for Toronto over the Tigers.
    
OWNERS PREPARE NEW OFFER:
   NHL owners, who rejected a new contract proposal by players 
Monday, are preparing a new offer of their own in an attempt to 
end the seven-day-old NHL strike. Players say they won't agree to 
a deal that doesn't formally acknowledge their legal claim to 
trading card revenue.
