Chicago 4, California 3 SPORTS SHORTS ASHE REVEALS HE HAS AIDS: Tennis great Arthur Ashe announced Wednesday that he has had AIDS since 1988. Ashe is "95 percent sure" he contracted the illness through a tainted blood transfusion after his second open-heart surgery, in June 1983 at St. Luke's Hospital in New York. Ashe, the only black man to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, reluctantly made his disclosure after inquiries by USA TODAY. MORE BASEBALL INJURIES: The list of injured baseball players grew Wednesday when Toronto's Derek Bell broke a bone in his left hand while batting against Detroit. Lenny Dykstra of the Phillies, who broke his left wrist Tuesday, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. Others out: Andres Galarraga (cracked bone in wrist); Chris Sabbo (sprained ankle); and Nolan Ryan (calf muscle, Achilles tendon). ZIEGLER SETS DEADLINE: National Hockey League President John Ziegler has set a 3 p.m. EDT Thursday deadline for officially ending the rest of the NHL season. The season was declared all but over Tuesday when striking players rejected the owners' final proposal. "Our phones are working if (players association negotiators) have any ideas," Ziegler said.
