CARNESECCA RETIRES:
   St. John's University men's basketball coach Lou Carnesecca 
retired Monday after leading the Redmen for 24 years. "It's going 
to be very difficult to put the ball down, but the time has come," 
he said during a news conference on the St. John's campus. "There 
are two reasons, really. I still have half of my marbles and still 
have a wonderful taste in my mouth about basketball.
    
NETS CLOSE IN ON PLAYOFFS:
   The N.J. Nets and the Atlanta Hawks went in opposite directions 
Monday for a playoff spot. The Nets beat the Orlando Magic 110-104 
to move into a tie with Indiana for sixth place in the Eastern 
Division. The Hawks lost at Chicago 100-93 and fell into an 
eighth-place tie with Miami. The top eight teams make the 
playoffs.
    
CONNER MAKES FINALS:
   Dennis Conner saved his team from elimination Monday by winning 
 an America's Cup defender trials sail-off. Conner's Stars & 
Stripes advanced to the defender finals with a two-minute, 12 
second sail-off victory against America 3's Kanza. "I wish I had 
Dennis' luck and my money," moaned America 3 skipper and president 
Bill Koch. "I'm extremely disappointed with what happened today."
