KNICKS, CELTICS TIED FOR FIRST:
   The Boston Celtics caught the N.Y. Knicks Wednesday, moving 
into a tie for first in the NBA's Atlantic Division. The Knicks 
lost to Atlanta 95-94, while the Celtics beat the Detroit Pistons 
92-89. Both teams are 50-31 with a game left. The Knicks are at 
Milwaukee Saturday, and Boston is home against Miami Sunday. In 
case of a tie, Boston would win due to a 3-2 edge in their season 
series.
    
TARKANIAN TO COACH SPURS:
   Former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian is headed to the 
NBA's San Antonio Spurs. Tarkanian will take over the Spurs next 
season, but will "be available" to assist interim coach Bob Bass 
in guiding the team through the playoffs, team owner Red McCombs 
said Wednesday. Tarkanian's contract is believed to be a 
three-year deal for $400,000 a year, plus incentives.
