HOWE SUSPENDED AFTER PLEA: New York Yankees ace reliever Steve Howe was suspended by baseball for the seventh time Monday after pleading guilty in Missoula, Mont., to a misdemeanor charge of trying to buy a gram of cocaine. BRUINS FIRE BOWNESS: Saying he lacked "instinctive things," the Boston Bruins fired coach Rick Bowness Monday. Bowness took the team to the Stanley Cup semifinals in his only season as coach. His predecessor, Mike Milbury, might get the job, general manager Harry Sinden said. The Bruins had considered firing Bowness two or three other times, Sinden said. FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS POSSIBLE: NCAA executive director Dick Schultz said Monday that a college football championship playoff would provide money to help sustain existing athletic programs and to add new ones to satisfy gender-equity goals. "I'm not pushing that by any means," he said. "But I think there's a strong possibility that we'll have a playoff" by the end of the decade. This article is copyright 1992 Gannett News Service.
