Bernard Duse Jr., 51, whose 1984 lawsuit sought unspecified damages, says both sides are barred from revealing terms of the settlement. "I'm satisfied and I assume IBM is," Duse said. IBM says it settled the suit amicably without admitting any liability. WHITES GET MORE COMPUTER ACCESS: White students had much greater access to computers in schools than black or Hispanic kids in the 1980s, a new study says. Alan Krueger of Princeton University looked at data from the Census Bureau and U.S. Department of Education. He found 60.9% of white students in grades kindergarten through eight had used computers in 1989, compared with 38.4% of blacks and 42.7% of Hispanics. THOMSON-CSF WITHDRAWS BID: The French group Thomson-CSF withdrew its bid for the missile division of steelmaker LTV, Reuter reports Tuesday, citing unnamed industry sources. The withdrawal followed U.S. opposition to the purchase on national security grounds. LTV had planned to sell the division to Thomson for $450 million as part of a plan to emerge from bankruptcy court protection. VIREX SOFTWARE IS UPDATED: Microcom Inc., developer of utility products for the Apple Macintosh, Monday said its Virex antivirus software has been updated to combat the newly discovered T4-A and T4-B Macintosh viruses. The T4 virus strains were originally discovered in versions 2.0 and 2.1 of the GoMoku game application, which is widely available on the Internet bulletin board service. SHUTTLE SETS ENDURANCE RECORD: Columbia's astronauts set a shuttle program endurance record Monday. The astronauts eclipsed the previous shuttle endurance record - 10 days and 21 hours - at 9:13 a.m. ET. The shuttle is set to touch down at 9:08 a.m. Wednesday at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The crew has been conducting science experiments within a trailer-sized laboratory in the shuttle's cargo bay. OPERATING SYSTEM SHOWN: Microsoft showed more than 4,000 software developers its new Windows NT operating system Monday. Windows NT, the 32-bit operating system from Microsoft, combines the ease of use of the Windows 3.1 operating system with the computing power of today's workstation, mini and mainframe systems, Microsoft says. It is expected to be released by the end of the year. GROUP TO USE TRW SOFTWARE: TRW's Systems Engineering and Development Division has licensed software technology to the European Organization for Air Navigation Safety to help develop an automated air traffic planning and management system. The 14-state European organization is expanding its air traffic control capacity to cope with the accelerated growth of air traffic in Europe. `BUG BOMBER' BEING DEVELOPED: Researchers at Iowa State University are developing a model plane designed to zoom over farm fields and drop thousands of helpful insects, which, like tiny paratroopers, will attack harmful insects. The project enlists the help of satellite technology and infrared video cameras. The radio-controlled plane, dubbed "The Bug Bomber," is being created by ISU entomologist David Orr. ALDUS ACQUIRES RIGHTS TO FETCH: Aldus Corp. said Monday it has acquired the rights to Fetch from Provident Software Inc. Fetch is a multi-user, mixed-media database software program for the Apple Macintosh. It enables people to easily catalog, browse and retrieve digital media in standard Macintosh file formats. Aldus says it will immediately begin licensing the Fetch technology. PCS COMPLEAT TO SELL VIA ZIFF: PCs Compleat Inc. said Monday consumers now can access all of its product information through Ziff Buyer's Market. Ziff Buyer's Market is an on-line service that allows individuals and businesses to research, compare and buy computer products. AUTODESK SELLING GRAPHIC IMPACT: Autodesk Retail Products said Monday it has begun shipping Graphic Impact. It is a Microsoft Windows-based software package that allows busy professionals to create high-quality business presentations almost immediately, the firm said. It is priced at $149. It requires an operating system and Windows version 3.0 or higher. NOVELL INTRODUCES NEW PROGRAM: Novell Inc. Monday introduced the NetWare Technology Licensing Program. It makes Novell's NetWare connectivity toolkit, NetWare Core Protocols and NetWare source code more easily available to developers. VITALINK REDUCES PRICES: Vitalink Communications Corp.
