The card stores five times as much information as existing cards. Memory cards allows computers to store information when a computer is turned off. STORAGE TECH'S STOCK GOES DOWN: Shares of Storage Technology shares plunged 10 7:8 points to $45 3:8 Tuesday as traders reacted to weak first-quarter earnings reported late Monday. Still, analyst Debra Silversmith of Kemper Securities says the stock could reach $80 in a year. "I have confidence in StorageTek's new Iceberg product," she says. It's a string of disk drives linked for fast computer data access. NEW TECHNOLOGY DUE: New cellular technology will be unveiled Wednesday by the USA's major cellular phone companies. The technology allows cellular networks to send computer information as easily as voices are transmitted over cellular phones. Currently, information can be sent on cellular phone networks only with costly and cumbersome equipment. LOTUS 1-2-3 OUT: Lotus 1-2-3 for Home is now available. It is the first Lotus spreadsheet aimed at home computer users. The 1-2-3 for Home software has 50 customized programs to help manage personal and home financial matters. SWITCHING SOFTWARE RELEASED: Synernetics Inc., a supplier of switching hubs for high-performance data communications networks, Tuesday introduced software release 1.2 for its LANplex 5000 family of switching hubs. The new release includes a security feature that enables a network administrator to select the type of packets that can be transmitted from or received by a LANplex port. SOLAR POWER TO BE DEVELOPED: AstroPower Inc. of Newark will receive $5 million to develop a low-cost, high-volume manufacturing process for its sunlight-to-electricity products, the Department of Energy announced Tuesday. Is is part of a $50 million project designed to take the solar-generating industry from its research and small-scale manufacturing stage to the big time of commercial sales internationally. BORLAND SIGNS DEAL: Borland International Inc. and Strategic Mapping Inc. said they have entered into a joint marketing program. They will develop linkages between their products that will enable corporate users to add a geographic dimension to their database applications. Geographic Information's software allows users to display database information according to its geographic location. HEWLETT-PACKARD MEETING IN AUG.: Hewlett-Packard computer users can now register for the 18th Annual INTEREX HP Computer Users Conference, to be held Aug. 23-27 at the New Orleans Convention Center in New Orleans. INTEREX is the International Association of Hewlett-Packard Computer Users. Full conference registration is $595 for INTEREX members and $795 for non-members until July 31. For information, call 800-INTEREX. NOVELL'S NETWARE ON 800 NUMBER: Novell has begun Tuesday begun offering an updated NetWare Workstation Kit for DOS:Windows through an 800 number, 800 UPDATE1. The kit simplifies the use of NetWare for customers using DOS and Microsoft Windows 3.1 and 3.0. Customers also receive new Burst Mode technology which greatly improves speed and performance over local- and wide-area networks. The program costs $30. ROBOTOICS TO SHIP FAX: U.S. Robotics Inc. of Skokie, Ill., has released 10 new models of its Sportster and WorldPort product lines. These include fax and data modems at speeds ranging from 2,400 to 14.4K bit:sec. The first releases will be shipped later this month. TSB BUYS RIGHTS TO IBM NET: TSB International Inc. has bought the exclusive rights to develop, market and support IBM'S NetView Voice Network Administrative Services. They are a family of programs designed to track telephone expenses, optimize voice network use and manage telecommunications facilities. SOFTSWITCH, ARDIS JOIN FORCES: Softswitch Inc. and Ardis will work together to link wireless networking technology with electronic-mail systems. Softswitch plans to use its network applications programming interface to integrate wireless networks into wide-area mail networks.
