Treasurer's Report treasurer's not here. Mostly funded by IS, with additional funding from other areas. Sometimes we get machines donated. Chairman's Report This is the TNSTAAFL!! Chairman is prompted to go into the "What is the SIPB?" speil... "We are a student service organization that helps students..." We gave out multics accounts at first; with the arrival of athena this is phased out. Now we help users become acquainted with Athena. mhbraun: We provide services that might otherwise fall through the cracks, that Athena might not want to support. We do development work. warlord: We'll get to specifics later q: when were we Office Report: The office isn't here. yandros: We provide services in the office. Door sensors. Walk in consulting, file transfers, etc. We have a lot of platforms. The Mac is probably the biggest use; they can come in and we will help them. We have a lot of manuals ... we get a lot of traffic. We are right by the largest cluster, we are always open, we are always available. Computer Services Move to terminate. Seconded. Discuss: created by sipb members who now work for IS. including stan (who hides) and others IRC : Internet Relay Chat.... kind of like multi-user talk. "Electronic CB essentially" - dcctdw. Very widespread. Running on Charon. Outside of MIT people don't have zephyr or talk, can use IRC. Zephyr to BITNET gateway: bwrite and bfinger can be used to communicate with people at BITNET sites. We couldn't do it before, except through accounts on MITVMA. Now we can do real-time communication; BITNET people use send, we use zephyr. nihongo locker: japanese language locker. Text editing support, people use it for their Japanese classes. They can type in Japanese and print it on a postscript printer. We also have a newer locker, zhongwen, for Chinese language support. We have an Arabic TeX. We are trying to develop documentation to make it easier for people who want to use Athena for their language classes. tsch6: Athena uses tsch, an extension of csh. Unfortunately, Athena tsch does not port very well, especially rs6k. SIPB provides tsch6 support. It's maintained by marc. usenet: We manage the NetNews servers in the machine room. OS/2: bjaspan is not here. He's developing a lot of stuff (like gcc2, Xwindows, etc..) we're waiting for more stuff, we will release sometime soon. SIPB locker: a collection of programs that have been found, thought nifty, and asked to be added. 110 meg, because we support a lot of different programs. TeX and LaTeX, archie (for finding FTP stuff) xscreensaver, webster, two thesauri. We are looking at buying a real dictionary. Alumni Server: A project to give alumni login service. A lot of people lose their accounts and their contact to the electronic world. This would be a service to keep these people in touch. Perl support: Now part of the athena distribution, but people come in for help since the SIPB has a large density of perl hackers, perl manuals, etc. Kevin gives an explaination of perl not recorded here. "Perl has been described as the wrong solution to every problem" - mhbraun Postscript locker... Services on pit-manager: anonymous FTP. q: Mac or PC software? mhbraun: Macps - allows users to edit files on the mac, transfer to athena, and print out the files on athena printers yandros: PS/2, NeXT, Mac in the office. We have MIT Computing (Superball) Report This is where IS members of SIPB make sure that SIPB knows what's going on with Athena. Examples include outages, etc. Also, we know who to page when things go down. NFS2AFS: it's going and going and going..... AFS SIPB Backup Report dcctdw: 4th and 40... The Backup is not due 'till monday. We maintain an AFS cell. We can test things with AFS, discover AFS bugs, test patches, etc. We can do this without affecting everyone. Publications Report SIPB provides free documentation on a number of topics: Athena, discuss, etc... In the works: iAthena : waiting for tlyu iPostscript iAFS: Almost done iNetwork Security: waiting for mhbraun to finish other stuff SIPB holds courses: crash course in C, C++ course, PostScript course, etc. iRefridgerator Restocking. See below CokeComm Report: dcctdw explains the refridgerator. and the soda jerk. vanharen chooses to remain nameless. =) srz: "If we were congress, it would be kind of like the House Bank." jis is the single largest active consumer of cokecomm... RO Tours: We run tours during RO. They include e40, the media lab, and the lcs. Richard is thinking still. We also have a table at the Activities midway; we encourage people to register for accounts early. Chad stuffed packets. IAP The minute taker is tired of planning for IAP planning month. We sometimes do tours during IAP again; we often have short courses. Other warlord explains other. carla points out that a lot of SIPB members are volunteer members. levin asks where she would send us out mail: sipb, sipb-staff, bug-sipb would we be interested in things like week-long programming jobs, etc? yes. Explaination of prospective membership and membership. Other Other warlord explains other other. Any random topics. DCNS barbeque tomorrow. MFA trip last weekend. Trash Cans in the back. 2:00 pm at the media lab: BEHEMOTH We usually have a trip to Mary's, but Mary's is closed. We have Mary's surrogates. What's up with Mary's? Lots of chatter about Mary's. Will it be where Woolworth's is/was? offline!!! Frisbee Frisbee at 6:00 pm in Killian meeting ended at 1:32
