Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 01/3/2005


The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by jtu.

In attendance were

Treasurer's Report:
	The treasurer is here.  He redid the spreadsheet for
	spending and money for this year to reflect the fact that
	we seem to have one fewer IP address (out of about 60).
	The summary: $4900 left.  Since there are currently $2800
	in outstanding allocations, this means we have just over
	$2000 to allocate.

Chairman's Report:
	The chair is back.

	There are elections coming up.  You should think about
	what position you would like to hold.  Talk to the
	chairman about it.

	Also, we should continue sending chairman or vicechair to
	the ISTAB meetings, so that they can get free food every
	two weeks, and corner IS&T managers in a room.

Office Report:
	Don't break things in the office.


Office Cleaning Report:
	What's the deal with this whiteboard back here?  It's
	getting in the way.
	

MIT Computing Report:
	(The whole office says): the network sucks!

	People on zephyr today were discussing information that
	was sent to itpartners.  It seems like this list gets
	useful information.  Can we subscribe to it?

	Sam (hartmans) says "it would be useful, and fine, for
	SIPB to receive itpartners mail.  It would not be good
	for sipb to send mail here, because it requires
	significantly different tact than sipb usually employs."

	tregan sent mail to itpartners today, saying that MIT
	would migrate to IMAP mail.  (This does not mean that
	POP will stop working.)

Computer Services:
	steve-dallas, our vmware machine, which runs mega-man,
	our scripts.mit.edu server, is having harware problems.
	First of all, it has a dead CPU.  Second of all, it has
	motherboard issues (dead APIC) that make it difficult to
	run the current kernel,and difficult to upgrade from 2.2
	to 2.4 or to 2.6.  It would be good to consider replacing
	the machine, or to consider moving scripts.mit.edu to
	dedicated hardware in the machine room.  (General agreement.)

	arolfe: If anyone would like to fight with news
	server configuration, I'd love to let you do it.  You can
	have hundreds of megabytes of--

Publications Report:
	iMATLAB is low; 3 copies left.

	IAP is here.
	If anyone wants to help out with publicity, we need

	We had one lecturer become unhappy, when he was called a
	security expert.  He is not a security expert.  He is a
	security weenie.

	The IAP suckers could really use help postering.  Volunteer!

CokeComm Report:
	Cokecomm is back.

Other:
	Chair may be losing her voice.

Other Other:
	belmonte: That was fubob on the phone, asking about the
		network.  He says hi.

	golem: The LCS-CSAIL has a thingy that helps people use the
	network when the network goes down.  Someone rented a DSL
	line that they use when the external connectivity goes
	down.
	
	hartmans: This network is really getting annoying.
