They're running a survey about switched on MITnet and Athena. They're doing it with the UA, GSC. They're trying to have it happen before the end of this academic year. (it's becoming more doubtful). It'll happen next academic year. jbarnold: Greg Anderson has suggested to me (IS&T Director) that he want's me to give a presentation about what SIPB is doing because they want to know what SIPB is discussing. Give me ideas. keithw: There was a disturbing Tech article about ISTAB discussing the future of Athena. Is Athena going to keep up with regular releases and such. jbarnold: Very little discussion of Athena as occured at the ISTAB meetings I've been to. I think it's on our agenda for the upcoming months. jtu: I'd like to nominate Janet for membership. (She's publicity chair, ran the CPW booth, helping improve presence around campus). merolish seconds. janetryu accepts. keithw nominates wdaher for membership. arolfe seconds. wdaher accepts. jtu: What has he done? keithw: He wrote an RSS to Zephyr gateway. jbarnold: He pointed out errors in the scripts documentation. jhawk: He's a presence in the office. merolish: He has a robot. golem spews something about sea slugs photosynthesizing. golem: You missed me in the introductions. Treasurer's Report: arolfe: Keith, you still have $170 for LAMP TV supplies. keithw: I have not spent any of it. arolfe: Alright, it's going away. keithw: I object. arolfe: I move to deallocate it. keithw objects to white ballot. keithw: I move use the money to buy a VCR for LAMP, which is one of the more visible SIPB projects. arolfe: Keith, you'd have to buy it before the second week of May. arolfe: I'll break a finger for every day you're late. keithw: I'll finger you for every day I'm late. arolfe: I withdraw my motion. arolfe: Keith is the only person who is delinquent. arolfe: Current outstanding allocations. $50 for IAP that I still need to straighten out, $880 for CPUs, $70 from Jen's office supplies. jtu: No there's not. arolfe: That leaves us $2300 dollars to allocate. MIT Computing Report: wdaher: -c sipb-auto -i backup has been getting some zephyrs about putting in a tape on bonfire-of-the-vanities. jbarnold: Good of you to subscribe to sipb-auto. SIPB Projects Report: jhawk: multics received a particularly stupid DDOS attack. It was easy to filter because they all went to port 80. presbrey: The servers came in for scripts service. We hope to get them up by the end of the week. We're definitely going to have it done by the end of the school year. jbarnold: We're moving on to a new version or the kernel, openafs, and we'll enable access to /tmp with some restrictions. hartmans: Which kernel version? jbarnold: Latest unstable. jhawk: I tried to push the scripts stable. A UPS circuit breaker p opped and resulted in an hour-long afs server outage for an hour. We're overloading our UPSs. hartmans: Don't do that next time. jhawk: Perhaps it shouldn't have been done for such a long time and in a window. arolfe: Are you going to allocate more money for UPSs. jhawk: They don't come out of our operating budget and shouldn't. arolfe: But they could. jhawk: I don't think that's a good idea. jbarnold: scripts.mit.edu is pointing to megaman. scripts1 and scripts2 are the new servers but they're currently not doing anything. We may need some publicity. keithw: We can probably arrange a Tech Column, such as ask sipb. jbarnold: It'll be 2 to 3 weeks until the servers are up. cporter: Anyone know how to get DVDs onto Steve-Dallas. jbarnold: Use the network. jbarnold: I'd like to request 2 IP address. allocation for 2 IP addresses for the scripts servers. 20 dollars/month per IP address but we can also deallocate unused addresses. jtu: White ballot? hartmans: scripts1 and scripts2 are not good names. jtu: How about thing1 and thing2? arolfe: Spell it with a 'z'. wdaher: That's awesome! with a 'z'! jhawk: The specifics of what they're named is not important. jbarnold: I like the names and am using my script service maintainer authority. Office Report: jtu: I have seven items. jtu: Maybe eight. jtu: I spent $300 on office supplies. There's email about it. I bought a CD wallpaper thing for the door with different install CDs. jtu: I'd like to allocate $50 for kinesis repairs. keithw: Is it under warranty? jtu: No. It will be $40+parts. cporter proposes white ballot. jtu: I'd like to allocate $300 for more office supplies. Extension cables, canned air, business card sheets, and shelving. keithw seconds. jtu: Shelves will replace useless bins. keithw: Friendly amendment to add in first aid stuff. jtu: Feel free to tell me what to add. It's left intentionally vague. jtu proposes white ballot. jtu: $450 for a new rolling whiteboard outside the SIPB office. lnemzer: We could replace the face but not the whole thing to save money. gline: Alcohol solved the problem for HCS. keithw: Who'll dispose of it. rayhe: It only costs ~$45 for single sided replacement whiteboards at home depot. ---- The home depot replacement whiteboards were actually only $10 per 4'x8' sheet, and are called "shower tileboards." ---- jbarnold calls for motion. arolfe objects to white ballot. jtu: motion for $75 for a copy of tiger. jtu proposes white ballot. gshmidt: We can get it for $250 with ilife and isomething. Do we want the educational family pack? jtu: I'd like to allocate $500 for SIPB t-shirts. kchen seconds. jbarnold: There was discussion over email. gshmidt: How many shirts does that give us? jtu: That gives us between 80 and 100. jtu: Active members and propespectives will get them. Others can ask for it after four meetings, because we don't know your shirt size. keithw: It seems like not a good way to spend IS's money. jtu: It's a good way to recognize the work of volunteers. There's no reason why our value of work is less than that of IS&T's which also recognizes hard work. It'll spread our name and presence around campus. jbarnold: You can also think of it as advertising. gshmidt: We are also providing service like Helpdesk. jtu: If someone, a prospective, got a shirt they can feel more part of SIPB. awozniak: Vector graphics? What does that mean? jhawk: No fucking jaggies. janetryu: The SIPB fuzzball was asked about by friends. I told them and it's a way to get our name out. awozniak: I can independently confirm her observations. jhawk: More and more I feel the lack of a colour printer. jhawk: I will not ask for money this fiscal year. arolfe: We have $945.37 left to allocate. cporter: Receipts have to be in soon. awozniak: It is possible to get receipt extensions. jtu: Reply to my e-mail about t-shirt sizes and preferences. You may end up with baby doll shirts if you don't e-mail me. jtu: If you have a preference for office supplies, tell me. Office Cleaning report: jbarnold: There are books at the back of the office which are not labeled as SIPB's but will become SIPB's if they are not claimed. jbarnold: There is this monitor here that has been deactivated here and is crap, there is a computer, and keyboard in the auction pile. Our office czar. I'm going to make sure they are disposed of. Please let the minutes note that we voted on this. Publications Report: jbarnold: We have stuff. CokeComm Report: jbarnold: People like rearrangements. jtu: I hate it. someone: We have lots of soda. jtu: Moving the fridge blocked off my drawer. Erin and I got a step l ladder. You should fold it up instead of leaving it out or I will beat you with it. Orientation/IAP Report: lnemzer: It's closer than you think. Other: jhawk: 9 months after I asked the graphic identity people to produce the logo in non-proprietary format, they got back to me and told me that they're going to hire a temp to do it within the next two months. lnemzer: We found the office rock. keithw: The Tech maybe thinking about re-electing an ombudsman. Now would be a good time to email The Tech if you have any suggestions. jhawk: What address would you suggest [people use for suggestions]? keithw: manboardtt.mit.edu golem: Would it be okay for you to do a cyrano de bergerac thing? keithw does his cyrano de bergerac. golem: I'm sorry I asked. awozniak: VooDoo is also looking for an ombudsman to keep us honest. keithw: You couldn't even print a 32-bit key in HEX! awozniak: zoz converted it, it was wrong? keithw: YES! Other Other: awozniak: VooDoo is coming out soon, you should submit this week. Please for the love of god, submit something. The meeting was adjourned at 8:11. Minutes taken and submitted by rayhe.
