Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 06/19/2006 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tabbott. In attendance were Voting members: arolfe tabbott | xsdg ocschwar keithw Associate members: jtu awozniak asedeno Prospectives: mathmike jdseale Guests: Treasurer's Report: '() Chairman's Report: arolfe: Since it's hard to find SIPB policies strewn through 30 years of minutes in AFS, I move to rescind all policies not listed in /afs/sipb/admin/text/policy.d. [awozniak seconds] tabbott: We should consider an amendment to let people populate that directory from the minutes during the next week. jtu: Are you aware of any existing policies? tabbott: I think we may have one about mailing vote tallies after elections. But I'm not sure. But there's no good reason for the policies not to be recorded in a coherent fashion. [2-0-4, motion passes] arolfe: Looking back through the minutes, I found a policy. I move to reinstate the "SIPB-sponsored Athena account policy" of 5/24/2003. It's included at /afs/sipb/admin/text/guest-accounts/policy. [tabbott seconds] [arolfe withdraws motion after keithw makes incredulous noises] awozniak: Is someone going to send mail asking people to re-propose policies that we need to keep? tabbott: Alex should do it. MIT Computing Report: tabbott: A lot of spam has been getting through SpamAssassin recently. jdseale: Anyone know why? jtu: Anyone interested in looking more deeply into Jabber. SIPB Projects Report: xsdg: I updated the ruby-lang locker to 1.8.4, the latest stable. I discovered that xcb is running athena 9.1, which doesn't have the libraries needed. arolfe: So you're saying the ruby-lang locker isn't backwards compatible to athena 9.1. jdseale: I've graduated, have a job, and have now begun working on iStata again (the guide to the statistics software). tabbott: I was trying to organize a SIPB hackathon. People seemed to think that the weekend of July 1 and 2 would be good. Preferences as to which day? jtu: Slight preference for Sunday. mathmike: There seems to be a net preference for Sunday. tabbott: Very well, it will be Sunday. I'll send mail. jtu: If you don't have ideas, Tim came up with a bunch. So you can come without a project and we'll have suggestions. tabbott: There's also this discussion about having cluedumps in the fall. Several people offered to teach. I'd like to get some volunteers to prepare the classes during the summer so we don't fall victim to lameness. Email me to volunteer to teach one. awozniak: When will they be held? tabbott: Mondays are in some ways convenient and in some ways inconvenient. The PDRs on the third floor are a good place. Opinions on time and day? awozniak: Certainly evenings. tabbott: One option is Mondays at 8pm, but that can conflict with long meetings and LSC meetings. Would some other day be preferable? xsdg: There isn't yet, but soon will be, a newer version of The Gimp in AFS. Office Report: jtu: jhawk is buying memory for multics. tabbott: I believe it's already been purchased. awozniak: What's the policy for getting drawer space allocated? mathmike: Policy? [laughter] tabbott: The procedure is to email the office czar, rayhe, and ask him to find you one. Or you can overthrow him and become office czar yourself. tabbott: It's hard to tell whether the SIPB office is open during the summer. One solution is similar to the Random Hall bathroom server so people can tell if the door is open. Another is to have office hours for the summer. Any thoughts on the office hours? awozniak: I usually zephyr when I get here. tabbott: Right, but that doesn't help people plan their schedule. Office Cleaning Report: jtu: It's a bit more pitly than usual. Clean up after the meeting. Publications Report: tabbott: We still need iAFS. CokeComm Report: asedeno: The chocolate by the windows has melted. Orientation Report: tabbott: SIPB computer tours will be Wednesday, Sept 6. This is the first day of classes. IAP Report: xsdg: IAP is sooner than you think. jtu: It'd be neat the have a web-GUI to let you enter IAP class information so that nobody has to compile all that by hand. tabbott: If you're interested in doing this, you can... jtu: JFDI Other: Other Other: The meeting was adjourned at 19:58. Minutes taken and submitted by arolfe.
