Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 09/25/2006 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by jbarnold. In attendance were Voting members: jbarnold tabbott jhawk Associate members: jmorzins jemorris Prospectives: mathmike tilia k_lai jwalden | andersk Guests: | best(?) Michael Aman Treasurer's Report: jhawk: Spend money fast! Chairman's Report: jbarnold: I have nothing. MIT Computing Report: jhawk: bitsy flaked out last night. Nobody reported it, which is bad. jbarnold: Another dns server was sad. jhawk: Did you report it? jbarnold: No. tabbott: Maybe it's good thing that every workstation uses a cache-only DNS server. jbarnold: Maybe it's a good thing that scripts does this too (as of last night). SIPB Projects Report: jbarnold: There is a Cluedump today in 3-133 at 8:30PM. jmorzins is doing it. jmorzins: A quick summary: it's little bit about lockers and how software goes into lockers. jbarnold: I put up some more linerva posters and Tim will maybe send out email later about it maybe getting released, right tabbott? tabbott: Right.. jbarnold: One week from wednesday, Paul Graham is giving a talk (Wednesday, October 4, 7PM in 54-100). mathmike: Who is he? jbarnold: He is a person who gave a computing talk at Harvard last year. He and Robert Morris started a company in the 90's and sold it to Yahoo. He is known as a "Lisp hacker" and as a good writer. jbarnold: I'm not optimistic about filling the room since it's not clear what he'll be talking about. Anyhow, getting a microphone would cost $220 from MIT AV. I've heard from a couple people that we should be concerned about filling our room. If we go with a large room, we would want a microphone, but if we think we could do with a small room, we won't need a microphone. Thoughts? jhawk: I would not go. I think it would be about entrepreneurial bullshit that I'm not interested in. Office Report: jhawk: keithw mentioned that we have no copy of the "Latex Graphics Companion". I move $50 for one copy. (jemorris seconds) [$50 for "Latex Graphics Companion"; white balloted] jhawk: meadow is not covered under insurance. It would cost $350 a year. Volunteers for researching new printers and advice? jbarnold: I think we should get it solved quickly and pay what it takes to get it done. jwalden: tellme combo doesn't print out the new combo. jmorzins: Email bugs@mit.edu Office Cleaning Report: tabbott: There seem to be a bunch of cans of canned air on the tables. jbarnold: jhawk was trying to extract a mouthpiece from an instrument. I think most are empty which is why he pulled out so many. Publications Report: mathmike: The cluster combo should change by the next time we have our meeting. CokeComm Report: jemorris: Some people may owe money. Also, reminder that dots were processed and people may owe money. Also, no money in paper cups! Orientation Report: IAP Report: jbarnold: We still don't have an IAP sucker. Somebody last week thought she was interested but changed her mind. tabbott: IAP is a pretty important issue. We had a variety of courses on a bunch of different topics. If you're interested, you should talk to either myself or the chair. Other: tabbott: jhawk is projecting an encore showing of B13 tonight, and it's free! tabbott: I took the GRE today. Their monitor had a bad refresh rate. They gave me some scores, but it didn't tell me if I passed or failed. jemorris: Did you have an epilectic seizure? tabbott: I don't recall going into epileptic seizure. I hope I didn't. k_lai: keithw zephyred saying it's Waseem's birthday today. Other Other: best(?): I just came from the Linux beginners meetings. We have meetings on Mondays at 6pm in the Stata Center cafeteria. We get people from CSAIL, etc. The meeting was adjourned at 19:49. Minutes taken and submitted by k_lai.
