Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 11/06/2006 The meeting was called to order at around 19:30 by jbarnold. I got tired and behind taking attendance. Fill in your own names. In attendance were Voting members: jbarnold mshaw jhawk nelhage yoz kchen Associate members: jtu asedeno jemorris | nygren Prospectives: k_lai mitchb andersk alexmv mathmike tilia quentin Guests: Treasurer's Report: jhawk: We need to spend money. Chairman's Report: jbarnold: Elections at the end. jbarnold: Rise and state your story. mitchb: Hi my name is Mitch, mitchb. Trivia: I've been a prospective 7 years and two months. I feel old. I was c/o 2003, worked for Athena dev, volunteered for OLC, do Cluedumps. andersk: I'm Anders. Prospective for two years. I worked on the debathena project. Actually, I worked on that before I knew it because Tim was secretly stealing my ideas. tabbott: MWAHAHAHAHAHAH! jbarnold: Mitch is awesome for reversing the fridge door. I'm utilizing my SIPB Chair powers explicitly granted in Article IV Section V and GIVING YOU ONE GET-OUT-OF-QUESTION FREE CARD! mshaw: Black ballot? jhawk: NO! andersk: Do I have to continue to stand through all this crap? jbarnold: Enh. jtu: What was the motion again? I forgot to write it down. jbarnold: John (jhawk) moves that we censure me. jtu: What for? jhawk: Attempting to give mitchb a get-out-of-question free card. [3-5-2: motion to censure jbarnold fails.] jhawk: DILATORY TACTICS!! jbarnold: My?? mitchb: He's keeping frivolous for himself. tabbott: Name office heads. andersk/mitchb: general-dink/zorp, lorraine/yaz, lola/porntoy, opus/zsr jemorris: How do you doublespace: andersk: Latex, setspace. mshaw: More XY chromosomes! jtu: Meets industry standard... jtu: What do you want to keep and what do you want to change about the membership process? mitchb: I don't like the membership process for several reasons. Most other groups are either checklist or show-up-to-meetings. SIPB is weird because you don't know when you'll become a member. People can put work in and not get membership, and feel upset by it. It doesn't bother me, but it bothers me that it bothers others. andersk: There was little motivation to work on a project as a prospective until Tim bugged me. But then I found my special project and I was in the groove. jbarnold: How could this be improved? andersk: I don't know. Tim helped me find my special place. nygren: How do you find SIPB members in a crowded theatre? OR what's the significance of the poster on the board? andersk: That's the multics logo. nygren: What's it mean? andersk: Rings of protection. jbarnold: GO CLUEDUMPS! mitchb: I'd shout "LSC" and look for the overlap... don't know the correct answer. nygren: Shout applesauce. tabbott: What's SIPB's most important service? Why? andersk: LINERVA. Duh. mitchb: scripts. mitchb: Or phone, walkins. mshaw: Least useful service? andersk: IPv6. mitchb: That question in the membership process. jemorris: What user questions can you answer? andersk: Latex. Linux. AFS Kerberos. *shrug* mitchb: AFS, Athena release itself, mail system... tabbott: PO server down. What do you do? mitchb: Before or after wanking with jhawk? tabbott: He's asleep. mitchb: Page jhawk. andersk: Page network ops. tabbott: How? andersk: Something in their locker? mitchb: 3-8400, phone tree, URGENT VOICEMAIL. tabbott: Certs broken. You don't know who to ask. How do you find out who to ask? andersk: Google? mitchb: who fixes what, info locker. tabbott: There is also a copy on the wall. jbarnold: Lock door when you leave? andersk: Yes. mitchb: Yes. Close it if it's locked. mitchb: Will you (jeff) say deberg's laptop? jbarnold: I'll try. jtu: Are you going to vote tomorrow? andersk: Uhh... I didn't get my absentee in time. andersk: I did it last year. jemorris: Erik (nygren)! nygren: Eep! mitch and anders, why do you want to be sipb members? mitchb: To steal Coke by reversing the fridge doors. ...oh, a serious answer? I wasn't actively seeking membership. A few years ago, I concluded I liked SIPB's goals, but that I could do that even if I wasn't a SIPB member. It will be moderately more convenient to work on SIPB stuff by being a member. Easier/more acceptable to get bits that are useful. And raid cokecomm. andersk: I wasn't actively seeking membership. All Tim's fault! Membership will make working on projects easier. And hanging out here is fun. [Both membership elections for mitchb and andersk pass 8-0-0.] MIT Computing Report: jhawk: Many things were broken. Power outage last Wednesday night. Explosion in manhole resulted in loss in power in much of Cambridge. W92 lost power. It fell over to generators and UPS -- mitchb: That's PS. jhawk: Its UPS -- mitchb: That's PoS. jhawk: Anyhow. When it came time to switch back over, fire-y piece of mess explosion. Casualties were mail and lethe, which corrupted its B partition. Users on that fs continued to see problems until late the following day. Meaning late Thursday. Mail broke from midnight until 11am and stuff was delayed for 18 hours. Network didn't notice until I asked at 10am. Over to you Mitch. mitchb: Lethe fell over for a bit. Some linerva users were sad. MIT's external connectivity -- many: SUCKS! asedeno: We lost Jabber for a little while, but zephyr stayed up during the outage. jhawk: Network admits the barracudas may have been misconfigured. SIPB Projects Report: mitchb: God help me. mathmike: Mitch is giving a cluedump. mitchb: Mitch is writing a cluedump. jemorris: Subject? mitchb: MIT mail. tabbott: Linerva announcement. Uptime better than multics! Nyah nyah nyah. jhawk: Multics had an outage. AFS deadlock forced reboot. wesommer helped find what was wrong. Giving AFS developers the dump. jbarnold: Moral: Not even slowlaris can save you from . keithw over phone: Please allocate $800 for blah. jhawk: This proposal is ludicrous. keithw: I defend my proposal. jbarnold: White ballot, passes. tabbott: People switch from moira to Mailman so that non-MIT people can modify their subscription. We should find a way to fix this. nelhage: I disbelieve. jbarnold: Use scripts or you will face power outages!! Office Report: jhawk: This phone is broken. tabbott: For the new shredder test case, k_lai, dnawi, yoz, and someone else reassembled an 8.03 quiz solution. It took eight hours. jhawk: This analysis is flawed. tabbott: Yeah, yeah. jbarnold: Office chairs have been fixed. I kept the office open for this. tabbott: Mitch turned our fridge door around. mitchb: How'd you know that?? tabbott: jhawk sold you out. Office Cleaning Report: Publications Report: CokeComm Report: jbarnold: Massively restocked. jhawk: We have no Coke. You're wrong. jbarnold: NO! NO! I DON'T BELIEVE YOU. jhawk: I am wrong. jemorris: Prospective dnawi did a partial run. kchen: cyruse did a more extensive run later. Orientation Report: tilia: It's sooner than you think! IAP Report: tilia: Eight months before that! Send me your forms now! We need to do rooms by Wednesday. Also, I need a publicity sucker. Make posters, slides, drop posters, etc. Please contact sipb-iap-sucker if you can help! tabbott: HKN is getting on our turf. jhawk: anneh loves us more. Other: tabbott: Fellowship apps suck. jtu: Akamai jobs or internships? Talk with me. jhawk: I mock Jeff. Other Other: jhawk: Lenovo laptops get stuck in customs. nelhage: Me too! Not weeks though. The meeting was adjourned at . Minutes taken and submitted by jtu.
