Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 12/4/2006 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by jbarnold. In attendance were Voting members: jbarnold tabbott kchen nelhage arolfe mshaw k_lai | andersk jhawk keithw yoz aseering Associate members: hartmans asedeno jemorris kcr mitchb Prospectives: alexmv quentin jwalden | tilia cporter Guests: Treasurer's Report: jhawk: Finances are coming along. I'm hosed. keithw: I would really like that money. I personally spent the money, and my checking account is sad. I want to spend another $1000, and I would like to know when I can spend it. jhawk: Finboard money is reimbursement-only. You can get a PO if it's PO-able. arolfe: Deadline to spend the money is around the 22nd this month. (further discussion of keithw's money troubles continues past the meeting) Chairman's Report: mitchb: I move to allocate $32.52 for the special meeting last week. jbarnold: jhawk, you're making lots of faces, so do you object? jhawk: Yes, I believe that meetings should only be reimbursed for food if the food was advertised in advance. [$32.52 for special meeting food : many-1-1] tabbott: We had a special meeting on Tuesday last week. I agreed to do something, which I'll start in about 2 weeks since I'm hosed right now. mitchb also agreed to do something. mitchb: I'll be starting this week. keithw: Can somebody give a summary? jbarnold: It was sent to sipb-private. MIT Computing Report: jwalden: My afs went down for the 3rd time (referring to mnemosyne going down yesterday). jbarnold: scripts also had some issues as a result. nelhage: Packets were dropping to strawb and other machines in building 24. kchen: 3down has something about it. SIPB Projects Report: arolfe: I have installed two disks and a motherboard for bloom-beacon. There has been a replacement machine for news.mit.edu that has been sitting around for about 4 years, so I did the minimal amount of software frobbing on Saturday at the hackathon. We should be able to switch out the machines in about a month or so with minimal loss of service. mitchb: Join us in less than an hour for the last installment in our Cluedump Series. arolfe: The machine room is out of ports so it's kind of annoying. nelhage: We had a hackathon last Saturday. I don't know if anything productive happened. But we came up with a lot of bad ideas. jbarnold is planning to spend time in IAP to make it so that you can apply security patches to a running Linux kernel without any downtime. tabbott: Both scripts and linerva had to reboot last week to take a kernel update. jhawk: multics now has a higher uptime than linerva. nelhage: It turns out reboot was not necessary for linerva. jbarnold: We have a new office head now in the front. tabbott: I finally got info from jhawk about chairs though I haven't done anything else. jbarnold: geofft wanted me to move to acquire more big staples capable of the load that the big staplers need. keithw: I move to allocate $30 for geofft to buy his staples. jhawk: What about the standing allocation for office supples? keithw: Okay, friendly amendment to $5 and whatever he can get out of the standing allocation for geofft to get his staples. (more objections) keithw: Okay, we'll have a compound motion where we get rid of the allocation and move to "post-staple world" where we don't talk about this anymore. You can execute it or not. nelhage: Execute everybody! jbarnold: Motion indiscriminately passes. Only I voted, and nobody else did (something about rjbarbal). keithw: I move to appoint him special Office Czar of Staples. (keithw is shouted down) quentin: I tried Micro Center but could not find any of the camera cards for less than $25 except as a two-pack that would cost more. hartmans: I move to up allocation to $75. [allocation raised to $75 : white-balloted] tabbott: The tables in the middle have remained clean of permanent useless crap since the office cleaning. keithw: You've (hartmans) been here 8 years. hartmans: I've not been here 8 years--I used to be over there when the tables were rearranged differently. And it would have been 10 years. Office Report: tilia: I bugged the CAC about vacuuming the office, so they know that they won't be bothering people. And if they don't vacuum, tell me about it so that I can bug them about it. Office Cleaning Report: Publications Report: CokeComm Report: Orientation Report: IAP Report: tilia: You might think that IAP is in about a month. You're wrong. It's sooner than that. It's sooner than you think! If you want to teach classes, talk to me or k_lai. Other: keithw: I got a job. To be a reporter. At the Wall Street Journal. In Boston. Starting January 8. tabbott: This is the last full week of term. tilia: jhawk is going to be projecting on Friday a free sneak preview of "Pursuit of Happyness". Other Other: quentin: You should come to the MTG performance this week. nelhage: I ordered and got a new laptop in under a week. It was impressive because they said it would get here around Christmas. hartmans: Maybe Christmas comes early in China. The meeting was adjourned at 19:44. Minutes taken and submitted by k_lai.
