Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2007-11-19


The meeting was called to order at <start-time> by tabbott.

Officer Reports:
	rayhe: I have no report.  I have nothing to report.
	tabbott: I’ll report that rayhe did a bunch of RFPs.

MIT Computing Report:
	wdaher: web and something else went down last night.
	tabbott: outgoing.
	quentin: ldap also.

SIPB Projects Report:
	quentin: The automounter in OS X is broken in that they’ve
		commented out with preprocessor commands all of the
		functionality used by Debathena to do Hesiod
		automounting.  So I wrote my own with FUSE.  It’s in
		my Public.
	tabbott: It’s small, right?
	quentin: I wrote a 61-line Hesiod library in Python and a
		134-line FUSE filesystem.  I’d like to get a locker
		and put up a webpage.
	tabbott: Lockers are always available.
	jbarnold: Until we run out of AFS space.

Office Report:
	jhawk: The paper cutter has been relocated from its former
		home.

	tabbott: There was a huge delivery of CokeComm stuff.

	aseering: I sent mail about getting VMware Fusion for
		coleco-sidewinder.  Move to allocate $80.
	quentin: I’m collecting a list of software that people want in
		the shared directory.
	wdaher: 80 dollars is like 0 dollars, but I'm not that excited
		about it.
	tabbott: This is one of those evil direct-download proprietary
		things where you only get one copy, right?
	mathmike: In the past, when I’ve wanted a full version of
		VMware, I asked CSAIL for a key and they gave one to
		me.

	jhawk: What happened to the couch cover?
	rayhe: jbarnold snuck it away in the night.
	wdaher: We have no reason to substantiate that claim.
	jbarnold: I have reason to believe it’s still in the office.
	quentin: Wasn’t there discussion of getting a new one?
	jhawk: It was approved and in progress.
	jbarnold: If people seriously want it I will…help look for it.

	wdaher: We need to be more vigilant about keeping this row of
		computers clean.
	rayhe: I don’t really care about office cleanliness.  It’s
		really boring.

Education Report:
	tabbott: There’s a cluedump at 8:30 by Greg Price on Haskell.
		He’s not here.  You’ve all seen the advertisement; it
		should be cool.

	mitchb: This is Kim.  She’s a prospective, and she’s
		interested in having an IAP event sponsored by us.
	kbeth: I’m an alum, working at a web consulting company.
		We’ve had a contract with Facebook.  Facebook offered
		to host a developer’s garage thing about developing
		for the Facebook API.  They’re looking for a
		university that’s interested.  I talked to LSC about
		it; Anne Hunter was suggested, and SIPB was suggested.
		It sounds kind of fun.  They’re not looking for money;
		they offered to buy pizza.
	rayhe: What do you need from SIPB?
	kbeth: The only thing we really need from SIPB is reserving an
		appropriate room.  We hope that SIPB would attend.  If
		SIPB would add it to the list of SIPB IAP events, that
		would be great.
	mathmike: This sounds like the kind of thing that Anne Hunter
		sends email about every day.  I think Anne Hunter is
		probably the appropriate channel for this, and I’m
		sure it will happen.  So I don’t think SIPB should do
		anything.

	dvp: We have some rooms reserved.  We have some people signed
		up for classes.  We definitely need more.  rms
		unfortunately declined running a class on Emacs, so we
		may have Dave Glasser do one instead.
	wdaher: Will he have the beard?
	tabbott: Are there any particular classes that we need?
	dvp: Yes, but I don’t have the list with me.
	tabbott: Send email.
	quentin: When are the events we already have going to be
		posted to the guides?
	dvp: Soon.  Within the week.
