Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2008-07-14 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by price. In attendance were Voting members: jhawk, geofft, mitchb, price, kaduk | quentin Associate members: hartmans, kchen, belmonte, keithw, mathmike Prospectives: xavid Guests: Officer Reports: '() SIPB Projects Report: xavid: I have sign draft that was sent out for people to look at. keithw: I made a VM, and entered the ... 20th century. price: We still need an IAP coordinator. It's a week closer than it was last week. We also need someone to run orientation, both computer tours and stories. And finally we need someone to run Cluedumps in the fall. Office Report: jhawk: We seem to have acquired 2 Winchester knives to the left of yaz. kaduk: I spent a couple hours recently cleaning up the cables drawer, and it now closes nicely. In the process, I found several items I don't think we need to keep, including Delta headphones, another set of poor quality headphones, and a docking station for devices we don't have. I propose we get rid of them at the end of this week if nobody objects. keithw: I second. price: We don't need a motion for this. It seems reasonable. quentin: I move that we dispose of them if nobody objects within two days. mitchb: Did you miss what just happened? We don't need a motion. quentin: I object to not having a motion. price: We don't need one. jhawk: I'll second quentin's motion. hartmans: We've often not had motions for this sort of thing, and I'd urge people to vote against it. geofft: Can I call the question? mitchb: [to price] Have you recognized the motion? price: I've not yet done so. jhawk: I formally object to not recognizing the motion. geofft: I'd like to ask quentin to withdraw his motion. price: For the record, the precedent has been that motions like this are not necessary when there's no controversy. But if we want to have a useless motion, we can. geofft: I urge the chair to recognize the motion, and I urge the Board to abstain. price: I just have recognized it. So, shall we vote? mitchb: quentin, what's the wording you want recorded? [someone]: See, this is why we don't need motions. mitchb: Well, I'm asking also because I think what he said was in fact more restrictive than what kaduk proposed. kaduk: It was. quentin: I move that we get rid of the items that kaduk identified if nobody objects within 2 days. mitchb: kaduk proposed the end of the week. quentin: That's a friendly amendment. mitchb: No, it's not an amendment. I'm just objecting to what you've moved. price: Any other procedural adjustments? mitchb: I move to table indefinitely. geofft: I second. price: Do we really need a motion for that? jhawk: Are you dismissing mitchb's motion as frivolous? mitchb: I'm not trying to be frivolous. jhawk: I think you either need to accept the motion or deem it frivolous. price: I guess at this point, I do. I'll recognize it. jhawk: Just to be clear, what does tabling the motion mean? price: It means the motion goes away. jhawk: Oh, well, that's clear. <6-2-3, motion goes away> geofft: I move that the SIPB may dispose of old hardware when there's reasonable consensus to do so without a motion. kchen: What is reasonable consensus? I question this because in the past, people have thought there was reasonable consensus, but later found that there wasn't. geoff: Okay, withdrawn. I move that when discussed over e-mail and not objected to within 3 days, hardware may be disposed of from the office. mitchb: That doesn't eliminate the problem. You cannot stop the wanking. People will always try to analyze the wording of what you're now moving after the fact when it suits their purposes. jhawk: You really don't want a motion for this. geofft: Okay, withdrawn. Can I move that we not make unnecessary motions? [general eyerolling ensues] Other: geofft: Linux 2.6.26 was released. quentin: MIT's DHCP servers weren't working for a couple of hours in the past day or two. hartmans: In April, I left MIT and now I'm being a consultant, which is fun. Other Other: '() The meeting was adjourned at 19:50. Minutes taken and submitted by mitchb.
