Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2008-08-11


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kaduk.

In attendance were

Officer Reports:

	kaduk: We have money.  We'll have less after geofft gets
		reimbursed for books.

	kaduk: IAP is sooner than you think.  I think we're still looking for
		a Cluedump coordinator for the fall as well as someone
		to lead SIPB tours.

SIPB Projects Report:

	quentin: I sent mail earlier today to the sipbv6 list.  I'd like
		to propose that when possible, SIPB services offer IPV6
		addresses with hostnames under *.ipv6.mit.edu.

	geofft: broder at nelhage's suggestion wrote a module called
		python-routefs.  It allows you to create fuse filesystems
		in python with the routes module which you normally use
		for URL mapping for web apps, like in Ruby on Rails.

	kaduk: We should have AskSIPB for the Orientation issues of The
		Tech.  I believe that geofft and jesstess have expressed
		interest in working on this as well.
	geofft: *strangely looks at kaduk*
	kaduk: It seems that I may be in error.

	quentin: scripts is forging ahead with Fedora 9.  And we've now
		announced it to our users, so we have to get it done.

Office Report:

	jhawk: We got a new machine courtesy of price's long delayed
		secret request to owls.  People should wait a while before
		throwing out boxes, and try not to throw out manuals and
		such with them.

	belmonte: jhawk, are you going to do the sticking wheels thing?
	jhawk: It's something I'm considering.

	kaduk: When I was here yesterday, Cokecomm was awfully depleted
		in beverages.

Other:

	kaduk: Ashwown House is moving from W1 to NW35 this week.  I don't
		know if the old IP space is moving with it.
	quentin: As an RCC, there is currently a different network for
		NW35.  You need to manually submit a request to have your
		hostnames moved.  The wireless will be on a different subnet,
		but not the same subnet as the main campus VLAN.
	kaduk: As a member of the Ashdown House Executive Committee, I may
		need to tell the residents about this.

	quentin: DEFCON happened this weekend.  There was a restraining
		order made by a federal judge at the request of the MBTA
		to prevent 3 MIT students from giving a talk about
		vulnerabilities in the MBTA fare collection system.  But
		the materials they planned to present were already given
		out on a CD to the presenters.
	jhawk: That's not a fair assessment.  The intent may well have been
		to suppress things they would have said at the talk that
		are not in their slides on the disk.
	geofft: Relatedly, the court has defined me as not an MIT undergrad.
	mitchb: Um... in the context of that document only.

	geofft: As reported in The Tech, scripts URLs are changing.  They're
		going to continue working for half a year, and then will
		change to redirects.

Other Other:

	geofft: Russia and Georgia are now at war.
	mitchb: ...?  Russia and *where*?
	quentin: Georgia... the country.

	quentin: The father-in-law of the US Volleyball coach was stabbed to
		death in China, and at least two Chinese-born athletes have
		dropped off of the American team.
	quentin: At the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, the "fireworks"
		were computer-generated.

	kaduk: There's some sort of work going on at the staircase at the
		intersection of 3 and 7, and it looks like it might be
		asbestos-related.
	jhawk: It's only been there like 2 weeks.

	pipa: Hi, I figured I'd introduce myself since only maybe 2 people
		here recognize me.  I'm pipa.  Class of '99, graduated in
		'01.
	belmonte: She nominated me for membership.

	jhawk: The preregistration deadline is Thursday.
