Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2008-10-20 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by price. In attendance were Voting members: price, jhawk, quentin, broder, aseering, nelhage, mitchb, neboat, kaduk Associate members: asedeno Prospectives: biyeun, esalazar, nathan_, jhamrick, fawkes, xavid, sjlevine, kmill, ezyang, pweaver, asmendel Guests: Officer Reports: kaduk: Some of the last batch of CD-Rs I ordered seem to have trouble being written by some of our drives, so I've ordered more. SIPB Projects Report: broder: XVM basically works, modulo a couple of minor bugs. We have a couple more changes to make to Debian packages, and then we'll be able to install all of our hosts and begin the migration project. price: If you're running a VM and want to help us test, and don't care too much about stability and would like to move to the production cluster, talk to us. broder: It'll probably be more stable than black-mesa, less so than torchwood-institute. nelhage: I'd like to hold a hackathon sometime soon, perhaps this upcoming weekend because it's the first one that I'm free in a while. Poll: preference for Saturday or Sunday over the other? [mostly indifference] nelhage: Okay, we'll probably do Saturday. I'll send mail about that. xavid: IAP is sooner than you think. We're trying to have an initial slate of classes ready by the end of the month so that people looking over the IAP Guide will get excited. If you're confident you'd like to teach a class and haven't told us yet, come talk with us soon. price: The end of the month is like a week and a half away. xavid: We can add more classes after that point; this is just to get a good initial slate out there. price: There seem to be a bunch of new faces; let's do introductions. quentin: scripts confirmed this weekend that we really do need two servers in order to serve our users adequately, so we're going to be going ahead and reinstalling one of our other machines tonight, if any prospectives are interested in helping. Office Report: price: There seemed to be some comments about the office speakers? jhawk: I think they sound crappy. kaduk: I concur. I think the sound quality has been degraded. It's similar to what would be caused by a poor connection, but I don't have any reason to suspect that in particular. kaduk: The fridge is sad. price: Oh, man, it's awfully black down here. jhawk: It's also 19... no longer jailbait! kaduk: Not only is the seal at the bottom coming loose, but there's a black moldy discharge. Along with the CDs I ordered, I also requested a jug of bleach. price: Or screw it, or something... not meant as a joke. jhawk: I'll look into the seal in the next fortnight. Other: nelhage: It's midterm week. kaduk: The supply of rulers I got from Office Depot has been dwindling. I take that as a good sign. Other Other: fawkes: The class of 2012 had a flamewar last night... it was kind of lame. price: I heard there were 400 messages last night. kmill: There were more like 200. quentin: The lesson here is that when sending messages to your entire class, you should use a moderated list. fawkes: They say that they have one, but the Class Council doesn't have access to it. quentin: There was a protest last Friday, at the beginning of Parents' Weekend. The meeting was adjourned at 19:42. Minutes taken and submitted by mitchb.
