Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2008-11-03


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by price.

Officer Reports:

	mitchb: In response to feedback from tabbott and some input I
		sought from price, it seems that some people who'd like
		more realtime awareness of what went on at meetings don't
		actively look for the minutes in AFS.  So, starting this
		week, I'm going to retarget the e-mailing of minutes from
		the night of the following meeting to the Tuesday night
		immediately after the meeting.  So, if you want to review
		minutes and get corrections in, you should do it within
		a day of the meeting.

	kaduk: As you may know, our annual official budget is about $19,800,
		but that's not our "real," budget, which is more like $11,500.
	price: The difference is Athena fees?
	kaduk: Those and TSM backup fees.  Of this effective budget, we've
		so far paid out a bit over $1,000, there are about $400 in
		active committments remaining, and another roughly $1,500 in
		expenditures that are pretty likely to happen.  So, we have
		about $8,500 left for the next 2/3 of the year.  Given
		that we start out with $11,500...
	price: Sounds like we're right on track?
	kaduk: Yes.

SIPB Projects Report:

	price: quentin requested that I make an allocation for scripts.
		scripts has two LVS directors that do load balancing.  One
		of them, rack-forward, has a failed drive.  At scripts's
		request, I move to allocate $100 for two disks, one of
		which will replace the failed drive and one of which will
		be a spare.
	kaduk: I second.

	mitchb: On a note related to scripts, last night quentin and I
		were discussing warranties and whether SIPB makes good
		use of them.  We concluded that we don't make good enough
		use; the scripts drive that failed over the summer and has
		been sitting around the office and was since replaced is
		actually still under warranty for about three weeks.  I've
		RMA'd it.  I strongly encourage SIPB to check on the warranty
		status of things that fail.  Relatedly, I move to allocate
		$6 for shipping of the RMA'd drive, to be billed by LSC
		which allowed us to use their FedEx account.
	price: I second.

	kaduk: There should be an AskSIPB column in tomorrow's The Tech on
		miscellaneous stuff.  I mentioned scripts, for example.

	y_z: This Thursday at 8:30, keithw will be presenting a Cluedump on
		audio and video compression.  This will be our 4th Cluedump.
	price: keithw is an expert on this topic, from qrpff to Sportcast,
		LAMP, etc.

Office Report:

	kaduk: This is somewhat old, but a few weeks ago, I gave away the
		last copy of iMatlab.  This document hasn't been updated much
		recently, but nonetheless I think we should probably make some
		more copies of it.
	price: Print a few?
	kaduk: Sounds reasonable.

	price: The projector is sitting out on laptop-land.
	kaduk: It was used at the scripts hackathon.
	price: Right, but that was two days ago.

Other:

	dnawi: Cokecomm now has a bunch of Oreos.

	kaduk: If you haven't changed your clock yet for Daylight Savings
		Time, I'm impressed.
