Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of September 6, 2010 The meeting was called to order at 19:30:00 by jhamrick. We had a booth. Lots of people came by. We had about 60 people who signed up, and a really awesome cake made by lizdenys. It was a cake of the Grumpy Fuzzball, which is our mascot. We have a hackathon this weekend, 1-11PM on Saturday, called "Admiral Hackbar". Lot of cool projects, and food and prizes. afarrell: Me and Karen went through and purged the people who were mostly not interested in becoming members and put them on sipb-interested. There was some wanking on zephyr about whether they should receive as much mail as they should. That has not yet concluded. jhamrick: Did you want to go over prospectives vs. interested? afarrell: Prospectives are people currently working on projects and working to becoming a full member. xavid: In particular, if you're actively looking for a project, then you're a prospective. If you haven't been to SIPB in six months you're probably not a prospective jhamrick: The distinction is a bit confusing because it's new, but interested is people who are interested in SIPB but not actively pursuing membership. SIPB Projects Report: ezyang: There's a scripts hackathon right now! We've been dragging our feet on upgrading our scripts servers to Fedora 13. Our current progress is we have a Fedora 13 server, and we're currently upgrading all our infrastructure to work on Fedora 13. ezyang: SIPB is getting into the business of build servers, in particular Windows build servers. I've set up a Windows build server with Cygwin and SSH. I'm doing this for something that I'm personally interested in, which is builds of GHC, the compiler for Haskell, but there may be other projects that are interested in this kind of infrastructure. I know davidben has been interested in Chromium builds, and Gutenbach is also working on client software. If you have comments or want to help out, now is the time. pweaver: XVM ran out of disk. quentin: This is a good problem. pweaver: We're considering whether to request $4000 to buy more disks, or less for some other solution, or some technical solution. afarrell: IAP is sooner than you think! SIPB runs a number of classes over IAP, something like 25-30 last year. If you have hobbies or interests, talk to Mats or I, we'll work with you on finding a coteacher if you're worried about having the time. We'll do the room reservation and everything for you. mats_a: We'll be sending out an e-mail soon. Your job is to reply soon if you think you're interested in teaching. rishig: Re the hackathon announcement, if you have any projects that would be appropriate for new people or old people, e-mail sipb-hackathons. wings: Tours and Stories are September 16. New people and freshmen might be interested in this. We'll tour W91 and W92 where a bunch of servers are, and then go to stories. For Tours, meet in the office at 6:15; for Stories, if you don't want to join us for Tours, meet at 4-231 and 8pm. Cluedumps will start on the 14th, and they'll be every Tuesday this fall. Random topics people want to teach about. Also we got our poster allocation. I sent e-mail earlier about two more designs. The cheapest option is going to CopyTech and printing them out for $80. jhawk: Our new board is not on a display case? wings: I'm not sure. jhawk: Did we consider putting up our board in multiple pieces so it's.... jhamrick: Lamination? wings: Included. Glossy one anyway. jhawk: Think it's glossy medium but not laminated but doesn't need it. jhamrick: I'm just worried if it's going to be there for a while. jhamrick: People should take a look at the e-mail Piper sent out and see if you like it. I like the one where you didn't add stuff to it, but *mumble*. pweaver: Our board is not in a display case. It's next to public postering and looks like this. geofft: Related to Edward's and Rishi's points, I've had a thought about build servers for Linux and other UNIX-like operating systems, and I'd like to actually put some of these thoughts into practice at the hackathon. If you're interested in things like build servers, especially the way Debathena does, and sandboxing and crazy virtualization-like things, talk to me. Office Report: afarrell: The grumpy fuzzball is developing a hole in the top of its head that's increasing. jhawk: Could someone bring it to the attention of a member skilled in sewing? jhamrick: It's actually crocheted, not sewed. I don't know how to crochet but I do know how to knit, and the fabric needs to be repaired a certain way. jhamrick: The 'remctl up' script for sipbmp3 is currently broken, and I haven't had time to fix it. adehnert: Did you see the patch I sent in? jhamrick: You are welcome to apply the patch. adehnert: I don't use sipbmp3, and I don't have a commit bit. jhamrick: You can just ask. mats_a: Also people are way too lazy. I wrote a Python workaround in the meantime. jhamrick: Mats, you _do_ have a commit bit! jhamrick: CokeComm has been restocked by Danny. There's lots and lots of Mtn Dew. I don't think I've seen so many kinds before. Other: jhamrick: It's currently rush for FSILGs.
