Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2014-01-20

The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by dove.

In attendance were
Voting members: achernya codetaku dove dvorak42 phurst vasilvv
Associate members: arolfe davidben geofft iannucci
		jhawk kenta madars merolish
        Prospectives: elubin
        Guests:

Administrivia:
jhawk: kaduk and I used the last toner cartridge.
	glasgall: I move to allocate--
	acheryna: It's an office supply.
dove: Can you zephyr/email Tom about that?
	jhawk: Sure.

dove: I nominate elubin for membership.
	glasgall: Second.
dove: For those of you who don't know, she's done an awesome
job at coordinating IAP despite the fact that we
didn't give her any of the shinies we said, and she
also completed/defended her Ph.D. at the same time.
	achernya: Do you accept?
	elubin: I accept the nomination.
	[Nomination passes.]

SIPB Projects Report:
elubin: We have a Ruby on Rails class happening Wednesday and
Thursday. The teacher is reporting an unexpectedly
large enrollment and would like a TA Thursday night
		from 8-10.

arolfe: I haven't been to a SIPB meeting in 4 years and I
maintain services that are cruftier than what you
do. We have a usenet server, news.mit.edu, and the
news office wants that hostname. Since I'm old and
don't really care, I want to see what current members
think: should we give them the host name, say no, etc.
jhawk: This is not the first time this has happened. Can you
offer us some stats on how used news is?
arolfe: In the past 10 days there have been 12 distinct
hostnames that connected to news. 3 are dialups, none
of them are in a dorm, and one of them was the mailman
		server.
jhawk: What's necessary to transition the name?
arolfe: You're gonna break everybody's news configurations.
jhawk: We'd like to offer a transition strategy.
achernya: Could bind it to a scripts directory or give it to
		IS&T to split the ports.
jhawk: And possibly offer to sunset that.
glasgall: We're not using it as a website and they have a
		valid claim.
arolfe: Does anybody strongly object to making IS&T deal with it? [No.]

arolfe: There's new hardware available for bloom-beacon, which
likes to chew up disks, but the new hardware doesn't
have enough disks. We'd like to spend $1000 on it, is
		that reasonable?
	achernya: What's the current capacity?
	arolfe: 216GB.
achernya: Why don't you try with the two disks that you have
already and see if the newer drives deliver more IO/s?
	arolfe: Sure.
jhawk: How long do you expect the disks to last?
	arolfe: I don't know.

arolfe: There's this RTFM service, which is a Usenet FAQ
service. It's an XVM machine, and we're looking for
		someone to help maintain it.

	kenta: I'd be interested.

glasgall: In the continuing exercise of "Adam continues to
have absolutely no good ideas whatsoever", I have
built enough of Athena for OpenIndiana for SPARC that
I can set up a dialup running it, which I'm now
doing. If people want access or want to help maintain
		it, talk to me.

geofft: There's a PGP keysigning after this, but it's too late
to get your key on the list of keys. If you want to
participate, you can probably talk to people
		individually.

geofft: There's a SecureDrop hackathon this weekend that a
bunch of news organizations are deploying that lets
people leak information to them securely; it involves
making encryption tools more usable. As part of this
hackathon yan is organizing a keysigning.

vasilvv: There was some progress on Debathena build scripts
but they're still far from being done.

New Prospective Introductions:

Other:
achernya: I was working on preparing the 6.828 lecture and
appear to have hammered my JOS into booting on
mega-man and otis, finding a bug in JOS while I did
so. I also discovered that if you have a processor
with an x2APIC, it is initialized as an xAPIC, which
should work. But it doesn't. So if any of you know
what is going on, please talk to me.
kenta: Could you please expand the acronym APIC?
	achernya: A-P-I-C?
glasgall: It's the Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller.

glasgall: In related news, caffeinated 6.828 continues to run,
we've had pretty good attendance and lab hand-in, with
some notable exceptions, some of which are in this
		room at this very moment.

Other Other:
glasgall: Hunt happened, Random's team won, several people in
this room were on that team.
iannucci: Among other things, this means that dvorak42 will be
		writing puzzles.
dove: So feel free to Hunt next year if you want to die.

The meeting was adjourned at 19:47:07.
