Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2014-03-03

The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by dove.

In attendance were
Voting members: codetaku dove dwilson dvorak42 k_sunter iannucci phurst tboning vasilvv
Associate members: achernya adehnert andersk cesium jdreed glasgall sgw | kcr srz
Prospectives: adat dianah13 dzaefn jogama sadun | jbarker kacquah
        Guests:

Administrivia:
dove: There was a meeting with John Charles on Friday. We underestimated
the amount of time it'd take to explain SIPB; we also briefly talked
about how SIPB would like to interact with IS&T. It'd be cool for them
to help us transition our systems like Linerva, and have more things
like Project Athena BITD. He seemed to like that one. We should probably
invite him to a meeting. I also got mail back from Hal Abelson; I think
I forgot to send this to sipb-office@. He said we should talk with him
if we're interested in dealing with the court mail stuff.

k_sunter: I think we should get a vinyl banner like other student groups
have so that we can put it on the front of the midway table, etc. They
cost about $50 for 6'x3' or so.
achernya: Wait, we first have to answer the most important question:
		What color is the banner?
        [bikeshedding intensifies]
k_sunter: It includes an image; most places want a PDF. The cheapest one
		is $35 for 2.5'x6'.
dove: As long as it has a fuzzball and says SIPB I'll be happy.
        [White ballot, motion passes.]

dove: We were talking about SIPB movie night and how we deal with
copyright. Here's what I have in mind: I think it'd be cool if we had a
'surprise fun night' where we had something fun to do once a month. I
was thinking about allocating some money for that, less than a
hackathon, and have one this month. We got PulseAudio forwarding working
from lola to zsr; I'm going to make quentin or someone write it
		up. Motion to allocate $100.
        [White ballot, motion passes.]

glasgall: About a month ago we started talking about a code of conduct
for SIPB; during the course of that month we've had extensive discussion
in the office and on sipb-office@. I think we've come up with a final
draft that reflects that. I'd like to ask for an up-or-down vote on the
current version as tagged by me this morning on whether to accept it.
achernya: I object on the grounds that there are open pull request.
adehnert: There are two, one from bbaren and one from kenta.
kcr: I'm surprised to hear this, but I haven't been paying attention.
glasgall: I announced at the previous meeting and the meeting before.
iannucci: This discussion has been funky, the process has been
unsettling, and to be forthright I hadn't realized it had been tagged.
glasgall: It was last updated Wednesday.
iannucci: I am not comfortable with the process we followed in drafting
this; I think it's been too heavy on glasgall and jdreed. This is *not*
a personal attack, but it feels like there's been no transparency. This
is not a community document, this is the carefully thought out product
of two minds as far as I can tell.
glasgall: I will point out that the initial draft was the product of me,
		jdreed, adehnert, k_sunter and dwilson.
dove: I am not interested in discussing this at this meeting; it sounds
like some people think it should not be voted on. I'd like a straw poll
as to whether it should be voted on tonight.
        [6-5-6 or so].
glasgall: I do indeed call for a vote.
dove: Secret ballot; members and associate members are allowed to vote.
glasgall: Are prospectives allowed to vote?
dove: No, I believe this is a matter of policy.
glasgall: Is that your prerogative as chair?
        dove: Yes.
iannucci: By the way, Github with signed tags for policy changes is
		awesome.
dove: 'Yes' means we adopt the policy as written, 'no' means we do not
but does not preclude future adoption.
        [Motion passes, 8-5-0.]
glasgall: I would like to thank the Board for their forbearance in what
turned out to be a long and drawn-out progress.
kcr: Do amendments require secret ballots?
dove: I don't know, I will make those calls as I see fit. I decided on a
secret ballot because I thought it was extremely controversial.

dove: Membership election for zoz is next week.

SIPB Projects Report:
achernya: There was a Scripts hackathon on Saturday.
kacquah: We mocked up a new UI for the Scripts frontend, and we started
adding content to it. Current progress is on Github.

adehnert: glasgall and I have been working on a project that made
zacheiss call both of us bad people. In particular, we felt a little bad
about asking for a couple dozen discuss archives, so we set up a
		self-service mailing list archive.
glasgall: One really cool thing about this is that you don't have to ask
		Ops for stuff.
        achernya: Will you add a `remctl help`?
        glasgall: It's on the list.
adehnert: The name pergamon is from one of the most famous Greek
libraries that did not burn down.

dove: LibrePlanet is going to happen March 22nd-23rd. SIPB is going to
have a table there; I'd like volunteers to help me staff that. I think
we're looking roughly at 9-6 on Saturday and Sunday. If you're
interested in helping out, please let me know.

glasgall: XVM's new raid arrives soon; hopefully you'll be able to
construct new VMs soon. We thank the community for their patience.

New Prospective Introductions:
        '()

Other:
jdreed: Hopefully everybody's seen the W20 cluster renovations; turns
out we might have money to renovate other clusters. Feedback to me or
		hotline would be helpful.

Other Other:
        dwilson: Friday is add date.

        glasgall: xkcd hit 1337 today.
iannucci: With the alt-text "hack the stars."

phurst: I got a 2800-line compiler error from changing one line of code.

iannucci: I am releasing my soft write lock on my whiteboard; I found a
paper proving a formula for the volume of a metric ball on the complex
manifold. If people need a copy of the Roost illustration that was up
		there, I have a copy.
achernya: Actually, the most recent sketch was Scripts.

The meeting was adjourned at 19:58.
