Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2014-03-10

The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by dove.

In attendance were
Voting members: btidor codetaku dove dvorak42 dwilson iannucci k_sunter
		phurst tboning
Associate members: glasgall jhawk lfaraone sgw srz | achernya
Prospectives: asuhl dzaefn jogama jrafidi zoz
        Guests:

Administrivia:
k_sunter: The banner will be here on Tuesday.

dove: If you're intending to attend LibrePlanet, you should e-mail me on
the associated thread on sipb-office@, because we're going to have
special badges for SIPB people. We're going to have a table there with
our banner on it, and try to let people know who we are, recruit people,
etc. If you can volunteer to sit there (March 22nd-23rd), let me know.

SIPB Projects Report:
glasgall: XVM's new RAID is here; we're hoping to set it up soon. Also,
adehnert and I did some more work on pergamon, so now you can twiddle
		meeting ACLs by remctl.

New Prospective Introductions:
        '()

Other:
glasgall: If you're a Comcast customer in Cambridge, you now have
		IPv6. They're handing out /64s.

Other Other:
        '()

Membership Election:
dove: How did you get involved with SIPB?
zoz: One of my first days here, I ran into Joe FOley, and he was like
'oh, let me show you a cool office and a group you should be involved
		with!'

dove: Could you summarize your SIPB involvement?
zoz: First thing I did was make punchcard-style invitations for the
reunion that year, then I was webmaster for www.mit.edu until IS&T asked
for that; I wrote the Ask SIPB column on what to do when you get DMCAed.

iannucci: What should you do when you get DMCAed?
zoz: If the stuff is really yours, challenge it. When you get any kind
of request like that, under FERPA, MIT has to let you know about it, and
eventually there's going to be a subpoena and MIT will tell you that
		they're giving them your information.

tboning: How do you double space at DEFCON?
zoz: You double space on a computer that's not connected to the network.

jhawk: zoz, how do you feel about SIPB's posture in the media?
zoz: I feel like SIPB doesn't really have a posture in any media besides
the Tech; there was also some good press in How to GaMIT, which I take
credit for because I resurrected it. VooDoo for many years considered
doing the Men of SIPB calendar, but it was fortunately shut down. SIPB
has a lot of respect, we did a lot of cool stuff over the years.

glasgall: What are some things you think would be a good idea for SIPB
to be doing to raise its profile in the media?
zoz: Part of it is hard because now you can't create the first webserver
at MIT any more; but I think advocacy is really important. I was glad to
see SIPB weighing in to Reif with the Tidbit situation. I think being
known as an advocate for technological innovation by MIT students is
		important

dove: You've been around SIPB for a long time, you've seen many
eras. What do you see as the biggest hange that've occurred in SIPB that
		you're happy/unhappy with?
zoz: I think SIPB's become more open, the office is much more
welcoming. I arrived at a bad time, when there were a lot of arguments,
it was hard for new people to get recognized. It had a sketchy
reputation; the lack of 'what's appropriate to do on the couch'
conversations is good. I think this has been really noticeable in the
		last 5 years.

achernya: I was late because I was stuck at work because I had a
problem: I discovered that the code that I thought was working didn't
exist, but the feature still worked. What do you call this?
zoz: It's like that FPGA circuit with a completely disconnected area
that was still required. I dunno what to call it.
        iannucci: Emergent behavior?
        zoz: Skynet.

jhawk: The world is paying attention to surveillance now; part of that
comes back to e-mail. People are using providres like Google more than
ever before. What do you use to read your e-mail, and how do you
recommend other people read your e-mail?
zoz: I don't want to attract any attention to IS&T because I still use
mh, and I don't want to be moved to Exchange.
        jhawk: Well, they're going alphabetically.
glasgall: mh does speak IMAP, and so does Exchange, so your'e OK.
zoz: The second half, any plain text fixed-width system so ASCII art
		shows up properly.

        glasgall: Favorite text editor?
zoz: Depends on the situation; I use nano, but for developing on the Mac
		I use BBEdit.

dove: dwilson, can you take that relic [the ctrl-alt-delete pusher] out?
		What is this use for?
zoz: It looks like it's used for retrieving something.
iannucci: The bends in the end are significant.
dove: I'm actually wondering what era it came from, since I don't know
		the creator.
jhawk: It was created Ike Feitler.
dove: We should give a demonstration.
        [dwilson demonstrates by three-finger (three-bump?) saluting a
		keyboard.]

achernya: What is the oldest working machine in the office?
zoz: I dunno, I know things get updated and their names transfer. I
guess I'm going to say the fridge or the microwave.
glasgall: Microwave's younger, fridge I dunno.
jhawk: Fridge was replaced at the end of Cathy Allen's tenure, so
		mid-1990s?
        glasgall: Older.
achernya: I assert that there is a computer older than the fridge.
achernya: I'm thinking of Binkley; it's still in the monolith and still
		works.

dwilson: Right now I'm upgrading my laptop to a newer version of
Ubuntu. I got this error popup [every character in the popup is a
square, including the buttons and a title]; what do you suggest I do?
zoz: When in doubt, I suggest cancel.
iannucci: Have you considered a screen reader?

dove: The office is burning down right now, what do you do?
zoz: I know there's a save in case of fire box, but I don't know where
it is. I'm going to guess it's the thing with the big sticker that says
		HERE on it.

dwilson: If the phone rings, does anyone else have a chance at answering
		that user's question?
        zoz: Whoever's closest.
k_sunter: You didn't write a script that takes every call?
zoz: I wrote a proxy that made the update script update every
		half-second.

dove: Can you find the nearest fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, and
		circuit breaker?
        zoz: No.
        [They're pointed out.]

glasgall: What's something SIPB should do that it isn't doing right now?
zoz: Be more visible to new people, but I don't know where we're not
doing that other than not having the Tech column any more. I haven't had
a feeling other than a vague depressing feeling about how much people
know how to use Athena these days, and I think that's a shame.

dove: I move that srz ask the question.
srz: Why do you want to become a SIPB member?
zoz: Because I think SIPB has very important goals and I would like to
		help further them.

[Meeting closes, zoz elected 10-0-0, meeting opens.]

zoz: At the risk of grandstanding, this was one of the very first runs
of SIPB t-shirts. I've been saving it for this, still in its original
packaging. [zoz puts it on over his shirt.]

The meeting was adjourned at 19:59.
