Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2014-03-31

The meeting was called to order at <start-time> by <whom>.

In attendance were
Voting members: btidor dove dvorak42 dwilson k_sunter iannucci kaduk phurst tboning
Associate members: achernya afarrell asedeno glasgall
        Prospectives: jbarker jogama jrafidi
        Guests:

Administrivia:
[dove tests the sound of hitting the gavel against various surfaces.]
kaduk: You need a gavel block.

dvorak42: I'd like to allocate $40 for the fans in the UPS in the
machine room and $25 for a voltage detector, retroactively.
        [White ballot, passes.]

k_sunter: I met with the CAC assistant director asking if we could hang
the banner. He said no because then everybody would want one, but they'd
pay to have our logo painted on the wall, or do some sort of foam board
		thing.
iannucci: Can we have an 8' grumpy fuzzball on the wall?
dove: That's a really cool opportunity.
k_sunter: They have a designer who'll work with us.

        k_sunter: I was thinking we could hang the banner above the microwave;
it'd make sure we don't forget we have it when we need it.
iannucci: We should have a file in admin/ called why-do-we-have-a.txt.

glasgall: There are drawers available. If you're a member and want one,
talk to me. I'll favor active fulls over inactive members or associate
		members.

dove: There will be a SIPB Fun Night at 6PM on Friday! We'll start
watching a movie around 7:30, and there'll be free food. We're also
talking about a video game night the Friday after the next.

SIPB Projects Report:
achernya: We build Debathena Trusty, it works as long as you don't want
to use login-graphical. It mostly works with login-graphical, but
there's some upstart weirdness. You can log into megaman, you just can't
logout without typing logout in the terminal. It also includes an
all-Python locker support stack, as opposed to the 1980s C code.
iannucci: Speaking of, how recent is the compiler?
achernya: I don't know, I'd have to check.
kaduk: So, how trusty is it?
achernya: It's signed by the Debathena release keys.
glasgall: Is megaman still running 32-bit?
        achernya: No, it's 64-bit.
        dove: Can it run PulseAudio?
achernya: That's why we didn't touch lola.

jbarker: I made what I think should be the UI for Roost login with a
button and a bunch of cool CSS animations; if you want to look at it,
		come on by.

jrafidi: Speaking of Roost, I exchanged a lot of massive e-mails with
davidben; we're going to keep all the ugly things, and then cover them
		up with nicer things.

dzaefn: mingy and I started working on the door; we're considering an
alternate representation of information in the style of a circle chart
that spirals around itself. We'd like to show a chart of the door's open status as a function of time, either by day or by week.
        achernya: Like the XKCD comic?
        dzaefn: http://xkcd.com/1335/ ? Yes.

achernya: There was an SMR power outage that took out the SQL primary
master; the SQL team (mostly mitchb) has been checking consistency
between the primary and secondary; we have 400 tables out of 500,000 out
of sync and we'll be correcting that. Many thanks to glasgall, mitchb,
and adehnert for taking care of the outage.
iannucci: It took a week to scan the tables?
achernya: It took 3 days, including doing other things and restarting it. We have 400GB of data.

        kaduk: Last week in Geneva was the European AFS and Kerberos conference;
lots of excitement about new things in the AFS world and some things
about the Kerberos world; there was some stuff about getting new
		developers in the codebase.
        achernya: Any estimate on rxgk?
kaduk: 4 months to have something worth testing, 1 year to have something robust.
glasgall: For context, the AFS protocol uses some really terrible
cryptography. kaduk and a bunch of other people are working to develop a
replacement cryptography subsystem called rxgk that will actually not suck.

?: OpenHatch will be coming to MIT the 26th and 27th of April, there'll
be people to help people get involved in open source.
glasgall: The OpenHatch people are good people.
iannucci: Are they responsible for entering the numbers every 90 minutes?
        asedeno: I'm LOST.

New Prospective Introductions:

Other:
tboning: If you want the office to have something it doesn't have, you should e-mail me at sipb-treasurer@

afarrell: If you have a startup or a friend with a startup, you should
apply to Mass. Challenge. You can get a big check! You'll also get free
office space and free mentorship from, free tools, and discounts on
things like AWS. The deadline to apply is noon April 2nd.

achernya: ZFS on Linux doesn't work in Debian testing.
glasgall: Surely you're not surprised by this.
achernya: I'm not surprised, but I am sad.
achernya: Also, it takes a long time to ext4-initialize an 8TB
		partition.

?: You can now catch Pokemon on your mobile phone. This has inspired me
to get an Oculus Rift again.
        dwilson: ITYM Facebook Rift.
dove: In all seriousness, when it gets to the point of not changing every year, I intend to allocate for one for the office.
jrafidi: I tried one out before; I almost vomited while standing up. I think they've gotten better.
afarrell: I tried one; it was somewhat annoying but reasonable.

Other Other:
glasgall: There's this sort-of game called Goat Simulator. It's
hilarious. You should play it if you have the opportunity.
dove: Elder Scrolls Online is just talk simulator.

dvorak42: Spring break is now over, meaning the prefrosh are closer than they appear.

dwilson: Buenos Aires airport has free wireless; in some of their ads, this is
described as 'wifi gratis'. In at least one, it is 'wifi libre'.
iannucci: Can we have a new class of freedom that's 'free as in hedgehogs'?
dove: Free as in 'hold on, this is going to take a while to explain'.

The meeting was adjourned at 19:50.
