Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2015-02-16


The meeting was called to order by vasilvv at 19:30.

Administrivia
=============

        slz: I have a new raspberry pi, SIPB’s new raspberry pi is not here 
                yet. 

        vasilvv: It has shipped, there was email.  

        bbaren: plan nine is not something Alex and I are currently working 
                on, and you’re welcome to use that raspberry pi if you want. 

        dzaefn: SIPB’s 45th reunion will be April 26th.  Please RSVP to the 
                reunion by emailing sipb-45@mit.edu.   

Project Updates
===============

        abrahamq: openhatch is going well, it’s being organized by Jonathan 
                Garcia and someone else, we will be having an event March 14th 
                if you would like to help.  it will be a lot of fun, we had 
                about fifty people last year, we hope to get seventy or eighty 
                people this year.  If you’re interested, please email 
                sipb-openhatch@mit.edu.

Elections

        csvoss: my name is Chelsea, I’m a senior in course 6-3 now, you can 
                ask me about Turing Machines or Harry Potter and the Methods 
                of Rationality.  

        bbaren: please describe your progression through the majors at MIT, 
                and how you became a course 6 today. 

        csvoss: I started out in 6-7, and took a bunch of biology classes, and 
                I think I’ve almost completed a biology minor just from 
                classes in freshman and sophomore year.  eventually I realized 
                course 6 classes were more entertaining, and switched from 6-7 
                to 6-3, but considered 18 and 8, but never really got close.  

        dzaefn: what does the voss say?

        csvoss: awoooooo, I guess.  

        abraham: do you have a favorite shell command?

        csvoss: the first one that comes to mind is tree, so I’ll go with that 
                one. 

        madars: what’s the best editor?

        csvoss: I like emacs but I also use vim sometimes. 

        sparrow_: the office is on fire!  what do you do?

        csvoss: I’ve been told there’s a fire extinguisher in the hall, but I 
                haven’t checked or seen it.  

        quentin: there’s also a save in case of fire box, in the drawer marked 
                “here.”

        jlrubin: what does the thing that is on that desk do? the weird metal 
                object?  [we are unable to find the weird metal object, 
                jlrubin goes looking for it.]

        dzaefn: name a kerberos username starting with every letter in the 
                alphabet.  

        [they do this for about half a dozen letters.]

        vasilvv: okay, let’s move on to another question

        [jlrubin presents the weird metal thing from behind the couch.]

        jlrubin: what does this do?   

        [csvoss discovers the purpose of the weird metal thing, with help from 
                quentin.]

        vasilvv: as you can see, there are metal things labelled bell #2 and 
                bell #3 on the ceiling.  speculate about the reasons bell #1 
                is not on the ceiling.  

        [bbaren brings out bell #1 from the top of the bookshelves.  it is a 
                large metal thing.] 

        bbaren: please erase some of the math on the board behind you and 
                write your name in tengwar.  and your username?  

        [csvoss does this.]

        bbaren: you’ve been assigned to be a general for MIT’s battle magic 
                class before.  what is your army named?

        csvoss: I’ve never thought about this question before.  Definitely 
                Mantis Army.  

        dzaefn: what is your favorite undecidable problem?

        csvoss: the super-halting problem, just because I can’t think of any 
                more right now.  

        vasilvv: favorite NP-complete problem?

        csvoss: favorite np-complete problem is definitely 3-coloring,  I 
                think.

        dzaefn: what color is the word SIPB?

        csvoss: light blue.  

        bbaren: please tell the office why this is a reasonable question.

        csvoss: synesthesia!  

        quentin: so, csvoss, why do you want to be a sipb member?

        csvoss: Good question.  So, I think like, this actually happened 
                because I wanted SIPB IAP to happen, and becoming a SIPB 
                member at the end of it all was a nice motivation so it 
                wouldn’t be a horrible bad idea and a timesink for me 
                personally ,but it was still a thing that I wanted to happen.  
                SIPB is also cool, and I know a number of the people here, and 
                they are also cool.

        vasilvv: there will be sipb executive committee elections next week 
                for all positions.
