Administrivia:

mcyoung: *gives a spiel in which he explains how this club works*

        *introductions*

mcyoung: I would like to nominate Kit Haines for keyholdership

        *various seconds

        khaines: I accept

mcyoung: Talk to me after the mob

mcyoung: Any allocations? At some point I wanna find out where the oscilloscope went

        lucyyang: EC has some

        mcyoung: I want a non-sketchy one

lucyyang: At some point they had 12 in the basement

slz: A reminder that because we have nice things, to keep nice things there are rules. If you're a keyholder you can borrow things from the office if you email sipb-office first. You can always use things *in* the office which is preferred. But keyholders *can* borrow after the message, which also helps to leave a paper trail

        mcyoung: Anything else?

mcyoung: Ah yes nice things we have in the office. We have every book ever, a VR system, this nice monitor that Emma's using, all sorts of office supplies and Yubikeys and lots and lots of duct tape in the Monolith...

dzaefn: And within it, a map of the Monolith

slz: And those office supplies are generally free for all to take

mcyoung: We have laptop stations. I believe sidewinder has Adobe Creative Suite. We have computer memorabilia hanging from the ceiling. All these business cards and other memorabilia on these corkboards....

        lucyyang: DoorPi

mcyoung: Ah yes, see the magnetic strip detector?

mcyoung: We've also got a fridge, a microwave, a tea kettle... ZSR, our music printer...the Duolith which has a variety of cables in it and the SIPB projector? Maxberry Pi, all of you have met Maxberry Pi right now.

        slz: The cable drawer!

andersk: Any cables in it that have been useful since 1995?

vasilvv: There are some very interesting cables in it

mcyoung: We have lots of wonderful archeological stuff, dating to our creation in 1969

mcyoung: Anything else in this office I should point out?

        emmabat: Probably

mcyoung: That would ruin all the fun! Oh yeah, the desk in the back is a standing desk, Victor will you demonstrate? Behold, it rises!

*space odyssey music is sung by members*

Project Reports:

cela: Hyades is finally back doing things!

mcyoung: If you guys are interested in building a computing cluster similar to Google's Cloud Engine I would recommend talking to Cel. Not all at once

ikdc: In vaguely related news, a service has updated from Debian Weezy to Debian Stretch, in a move that has been called "unnecessary" and "why didn't we do this any other way"

mcyoung: IAP is closer than you think! SIPB runs IAP classes and someone should take point on organizing this. Great membership project. Also SIPB Computers& Stories is another tradition, it's really great. Someone should take point on this. Also a great membership project.

pravinas: I did it last year I think and can help a new member get started on doing things.

        vasilvv: What's up with Cluedumps?

foner: A long-running series in which we invite people to give a talk of interest to people at MIT, it's been running about 10 years now. I'd like to soon hand it off to someone to be the Cluedump organizer. It involves doing publicity, finding speakers, getting refreshments and reserving a room, it does not require computer knowledge. Let me know if you're interested

mcyoung: Giving a Cluedump is also a great thing to do for SIPB

foner: There's also a Cluedump Wiki giving abstracts for all the titles

slz: LibrePlanet is a FOSS conference generally held during spring break. The Free Software Foundation handles most, your job as SIPB coordinator is to help reserve rooms and be there as the point contact person during the conference. It's a great outreach program, we just need one or two people to organize it. We will help of course.

mcyoung: If you're interested in any of those contact me.

slz: Mirrors -- mirrors.mit.edu is an open source software mirroring site. It's great, if you're on campus download on Mirrors is pretty fast. Last week I wheeled an old Scripts server from W20 to W91, now we can finally upgrade it to somewhat modern-day hardware. If you're interested in Linux server administration, talk to me and finally make Mirrors better. We're trying to migrate off old software and move Mirrors onto Scripts for a higher-availabilty situation where one server failing doesn't take everything down. Then we'll want to move Mirrors to Hyades when Hyades is ready. Talk to me

Other:

slz: Oracle apparently fired the entirety of the Solaris staff. They were terminated by robocall

slz: Linux 3.13 has been released! Dammit, 4.13. Anyway you might find it in a nearby Linux distro soon! Apparently you can do TLS in the kernel now!

        mcyoung: Oh god why?

alvareza: Usually meetings don't go on this long unless it's an election, it's just long because we're showing you all the things and doing introductions

lucyyang: We have cool tshirts that you should totally buy because I totally didn't buy them out of my own pocket or anything. On the front they have a frocket too, ooh aaah. But come see me

Other Other:

        dzaefn: If you are a person in love with the wonders of JavaScript, go to jsfuck.com and input a javascript program, it will output a program that does the same thing but only using ! () and {}

maxmurin: there's an exploit of ebay because it looks for script tags but doesn't check for punctuation or blank spaces so people ran arbitrary javascript code in ebay's webpages

mcyoung: I would like to remind everyone that a human outputs about 100 watts of power, I'm wearing a sweater and it's incredibly hot in here

ikdc: I misheard as "terminated the employees by rublecop rule" -- a linter for ruby code. I thought they added a new rule that when they committed it told them they were fired

foner: So the least productive employees lasted the longest

mcyoung: Let the record show that ikdc is an avid Ruby lover

        dzaefn: Slander!

ikdc: All languages were created equal but some less equal than others

        bpchen: Classes start Wednesday!

The meeting was adjourned at 20:18.
