Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2019-05-13 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by emmabat. In attendance were Student keyholders: emmabat, alvareza, cela, gshay, mtheng, mwnguyen, wmoses | bpchen, yczeng Associate keyholders: merolish, bbaren, Members: stevengo, jkoppel, murphyj, ksmori Guests: '() Administrivia: wmoses: I reached out to csail & IS&T about the SIPB 50, both of them said that they would happy to help with the SIPB 50 wmoses: I would like to nominate murphyj for keyholdership. emmabat: seconded. wmoses: I would like to motion to allocate $2000 for phase 2 of the wireless ISP project. the phase two aspect is to create an Access Point that is available to a lot of people. emmabat: We still have a lot of budget. wmoses: This is cool because SIPB has it's own AS number, we can do peering, with IS&T for instance. I think it would be cool to learn about these things. cela: what would this look like? the system you are proposing? wmoses: I talked to joi about it, We need to figure out who to talk to to put stuff on the STUD. wmoses: in the original roofnet project, people created a mesh network out of their dishes. New York has a famous mesh network of this variety. emmabat: This wouldn't disrupt operations of 802? wmoses: No, it is a different band alvareza: legal ramifications? wmoses: This will be internal to MIT, and useful for SIPB. However, if the scope was to expand, . It will mostly be for teaching, and learning about bgp & mesh network. cela: could we use this for our datacenter redundancy? wmoses: there is a 100 gigabit backhaul version of this. so yes, but that would be different hardware. bbaren: I work at google, we have a view to the green building and csail, this is the sort of thing the amateur radio people at Google would go nuts about emmabat: A peering connection with Google? wmoses: Things that we can rope into are like figuring out how to code up bgp and more physical stuff. [motion passes: Y 13 - N 0 - A 1] emmabat: We currently have a fair amount of budget, we our massive technical purchases last year, since we have extra budget, we would like to spend it on current members and recruitments. This includes T-Shirts ~$500, custom USB sticks, which we can use for early cluedumps next semester, we have stickers ~$500, we can renew the ones caplock made. We can purchase pamphlets, we can also get phone wallets x100 ~ $300, we can get 100 carabeiners for $100, these are the proposed swag items. bbaren: I propose you guys should get SIPB Yubikeys. wmoses: for pamphlets, do we have to send the pamphlets to copytech before hand? emmabat: we want to get these items before june. To get everything I listed would be about $2000. Any comments? wmoses: Hats might be useful, because too many people give away t-shirts. cela: SIPB lab coats. yczeng: what about SIPB Hoodies? emmabat: that might be expensive, but we can subsidize those for people who expressed interest. yczeng: I have a proposal, a sticker that covers up the windows key. emmabat: like the removable kind of sticker? yczeng: No. wmoses: logisitcally, we should get a rex chair. wmoses: I think it depends on what we decide to get. It is hard to see right now. emmabat: We might want to aim for the middle and go with $2500, and then discuss/allocate next meeting. emmabat: on the topic of swag and publicity, we need a rex chair. It is the same/less work load as SIPBW chair, except you aren't taking classes. It is basically running/getting people to run events that will be happening, and making sure we get in the REX booklet, and activities Midway. Its important because people don't remember CPW since they are sleep deprived. yczeng: I think zachpi might be able to help, he will be here over the summer, so will I. emmabat: If you are interested, emmabat: I have one more thing, Angel and I will be meeting with Garry and Mark next monday, if you have a burning question for them, let us know, we can bring them up. As you may know, There was no actual process for getting permanent DHCP lease, this should be fixed now, the forms should now reflect the policy. yczeng: foner said he would be willing to run cluedumps. emmabat: I thought we would run some cluedumps on the basics of computing at MIT at the beginning of next semester. Project Reports: cela: work on scripts continues, we may have crashed XVM or not, but regardless XVM is back up. cela: I started doing hardware ops on hardware detection, some of the machines can't boot from USB, they can boot from floppys or network. We might just want to get rid of them. If you have opinions about hardware let me know, I am still deciding them. yczeng: apparently SIPB meeting in the 80s use to run for 2 hours. Other: stevengo: I am steve, making a film about SIPB. I wanted to express my gratitude for being a fly in the wall, so I brought some donuts. I brought some forms if you want to be in the film. These forms are for MIT, so if this documentary becomes popular, MIT gets a cut about it. I also want to identify how people want to be identified. The first cut of the film will be shown in my class.
