Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2020-04-06 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by wmoses. An EC meeting this past Friday and a meeting with Nick Roy of Quest for Intelligence. He wants to help SIPB distribute cloud credits. If anyone wants to create a mailing list sipb-cloud, go ahead. wmoses: The minecraft server we are hosting is popular, MIT student life made a thing. We are helping Nick Roy with minecraft, Mark Silis is now also helping with minecraft. wmoses: I guess that was project reports. At the EC meeting we also discussed making SIPB project info easier to get. Georgia sent an email and bds is looking at wikis. quentin: There's already a project page on the SIPB homepage which is a wiki. emmabat: Yes, but that no one updates it says something about usability. quentin: If that's not useful, how is another wiki people don't know about going to help? emmabat: The one we have is hard to update. quentin: Alright, we can take details offline. wmoses: Two other bits. Petey came to Alice and Emma and I for having earlier set up a discord bot for prefrosh to make a discord, He also wants us to help with some CPW specific pieces. He also offered financial support. There was a large discussion at the EC meeting about what financial support would be helpful. Also related to Nick Roy possibly offering UROP funding. Emma sketched guidelines, brief rundown is that there is UROP style or other project neutral funding, and also potential with other groups approaching SIPB. Emma, want to say stuff? emmabat: We probably want policy / guidelines for how SIPB should think about funding, what to accept, and how to disburse it. We want to make sure that if we accept funding we should have EC approval, and ask for comments from the board. We are considering funding from Admissions for the discord bot - thoughts? emmabat: The second bit is how we decide who can be funded. We basically think that for AWS credits or UROP funding the EC should be able to create a committee to look at applications. emmabat: I think the EC is in relative agreement and we will open for general discussion of board soon. Anyone have thoughts or want to bring up important ethical or logistical considerations? wmoses: This will include stuff like dispersing cloud credits, or funding someone to work on a project over the summer who otherwise wouldn't be able to, or external people giving funding. We need to discuss how these match with SIPB's goals of being a volunteer group and providing services for all and not for specific users. emmabat: I'd like to nominate mau for keyholdership. wmosses: Seconded. do you accept? mau: I accept. wmoses: Talk to me after the meeting. dbopp: Big CPW update! We have a way to submit events! A few spots I have questions about. I'm still putting together CPW events we might do, it starts in a week, from April 13th to 30th, main time frame 16th through 19th. Do we want to spread out our events, or have most of them on the main weekend? Reach out tonight or tomorrow because events need to be submitted by Sunday. emmabat: If we were planning remote social events, we could consider making those CPW events. dbopp: Yes, I'd just need to know now. Prefrosh will likely have access to MIT licenses for Zoom. wmoses: Speaking of Zoom, there have been some concerns about Zoom as a platform and therefore using something else. We will test out a few others. Any comments from people? bds: It rubs me the wrong way how they make it difficult to use the web client. quentin: Using the web version eliminates most security concerns. vchuravy: All video chats are bad. If we are going to switch, we should look into open source infrastructure. wmoses: bds mentioned jitsi, I've seen one other. quentin: I did some tests with jitsi and it could not handle this number of people. cela: I need to be able to call in with a phone, otherwise my latency is not reasonable. Lots of open source stuff doesn't allow that. quentin: There's Google Meet, but it may not be much better. cela: It's not much better. wmoses: Well, we will try a few. Project Reports: gshay: If you are a project lead, I sent out the current list of project roles, please take a look and tell me if it looks accurate. dbopp: From a CPW point of view, our website will probably be linked somewhere. That project list will be seen by prefrosh. quentin: We should check the other frontpages and make sure they are vaguely recent. cela: Hyades does continue now. Uplink does not yet continue. lkdc: What time again? cela: It's on the calendar. 10 pm on Thurs. Uplink is 5 pm on Fridays starting this week. cela: HWOPS, well. emmabat: Something something SMR crack team. mrittenb: Scripts has finally launched pony changes. You can now press a button and easily switch to a more recent operating system! wmoses: What's the difference between the old and new ones in years? mrittenb: The old one was Fedora 20, which I think is about six years old, and the new one is Fedora 30, which is still supported. cela: It took a lot of work by the Scripts team to get to this point. wmoses: It's good to have an up-to-date operating system, there have been lots of vulnerabilities in the past six years. vchuravy: There are still RH 7 computers. wmoses: WISP continues. We have plugged our auth server into a SQL database. We haven't tested with physical hardware because we are farther away. Other: bds: The PM of Britain has been taken to the ICU. wmoses: Stay safe you all. emmabat: Be unlike the PM of Britain. mcyoung: There is now a non-mandatory curfew in Boston. quentin: A recommended curfew, yes. mcyoung: It will probably not be a recommended curfew soon. emmabat: The CDC is recommending face masks. quentin: Yeah, they are recommending that you make your own. emmabat: The rubber band technique only works for a very specific type of rubber band. kjchen: Can you use something else? emmabat: My scarf slid down too much, and I couldn't pull it up because that defeats the point. wmoses: This reveals a need for SIPB branded masks. emmabat: If the masks were easy to manufacture, we'd have lots of them. alvareza: CPW idea - mask decorating. Other Other: dbopp: Tom Scott made a YouTube video where a bot looks at the views and changes the title to be "this video has x views", where x is the correct number of views. wmoses: A good video. alveraza: Tom Scott also published a video on why copyright is broken for youtube stuff. wmoses: Also a good video. lkdc: How do I join the minecraft server? wmoss: It's at froyo-machine.mit.edu. lkdc: The one we misracked, with lots of storage? wmoses: Yes, that one, although the storage is currently cursed and inaccessible, you could help with that. dbopp: All froyo-machines are bad.
