Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2022-09-26


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by jmvidal.

In attendance were

        bds: i propose an allocation of $40 to buy flash drives.

Project Reports:

        mrittenb: courseroad had our first meeting this semester. we assigned issues. i updated all our packages which took longer that it should have.
        
        jmvidal: hwops has a work party this wednesday at 5 again to continue documenting our servers and their specs.
        
        cjq: cluedumps is looking for more people to give cluedumps.
        
        markchil: considering running a cluedump on matplotlib and/or matlab. lots of material but can't guarantee a timeline, tell me preferences.

Other:

        gshay: we just hit an asteroid?
        
        jmvidal: yeah we're hitting the, the thing.
        
        toomas: by we i think it's the prob that nasa sent and not the earth itself.
        
        mrittenb: did it move how we wanted it to?
        
        gshay: we won't know until we do some observing. all that happened was we lost signal because presumably something exploded.
        
        agrebe: why was this necessary to test empirically? aren't these dynamics well-understood?
        
        gshay: it's nice to do it in not a life-and-death scenario
        
        toomas: also chaotic systems
        
        jeffery: and testing the system, not necessarily learn science
        
        cjq: there's a compiler compiler called langcc that claims to be faster than standard lexers and parsers by around 5x: <https://github.com/jzimmerman/langcc>
        
        cjq: sipb has an exhibit in the new mit museum! you should come and watch billy and shayna talk about the minecraft institute of technology and sipb.

        mrittenb: happy jewish new year
        
        mitimmy: users are reporting bit rot with old google photos
        
        bds: google camera already DEMOLISHES the quality of any video you take. i took a video of the surrounding area and it looks like the charles is made out of blue koolaid.
        
        mitimmy: can't you turn the machine learning off
        
        bds: idk it's hidden somewhere in the settings menu i couldn't find if it is
        
        cjq: have you considered that the other portion of the sipb meeting is like a bad version of hacker news?
        
        toomas: i get all my news from sipb meetings
        
        mrittenb: i'd say it's a good version of hacker news
        
        psvenk: it's better, less tendency for flame wars
        
        jmvidal: the career fair is sooner than you think
        
        vish2004: does spring also have a career fair?
        
        toomas: there's a european one?
        
        vish2004: but then you have to go to europe…
