Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2024-02-19 The meeting was called to order at 19:36 by colclark. In attendance were Student keyholders: alwinfy, innaavo, rgabriel, nmorgan, turino14, colclark, amigdal, psvenk, aabreu, jmvidal, arjunjb Associate keyholders: almonds Members: scj643, guoj1112 Guests: almurph, sabren Administrivia: colclark: Hello everyone it's 7:36 which is close enough. Welcome to SIPB meeting rgabriel: It's 7:35 colclark: It's 7:36 your clock sucks. Um. Yeah let's get it started! psvenk: The end of colclark's reign is sooner than you think! colclark: It's not over yet! colclark: [hands the gavel over to innaavo, to much applause] innaavo: (jokingly) You should probably get out of here. psvenk: Are you really leaving? colclark: Yeah! It's called fading into the sunset. aabreu: One thing I was talking to almonds about on sunday was having, for each project, a sort of onboarding system. Just a way for new members to get easily involved in a project. colclark: I'm back btw innaavo: I like that. How should we approach it? amigdal: We could fold it into the SIPB Docs project, but more importantly: someone should (politely) go around and bug people/individual projects until they write docs. Any volunteers? aabreu: That sounds good, I guess. I'll take that. So if everyone would start doing that, I guess... almonds: Also, the new SIPB site will have a blogs feature - we can use that. aabreu: That way if a SIPB project stops getting worked on for a while, there's still something for a newcomer to work on and get into the project alwinfy: I have a quick allocation to make - $120 post-facto for snacks this past week. innaavo: Seconded innaavo: Motion to white ballot alwinfy: Seconded [motion passes by white ballot] alwinfy: I have a second allocation to make - rolling $100 every week to the end of the semester (May 20th) for snacks innaavo: Seconded psvenk: colclark, you count the votes. [motion passes 10-0] psvenk: I love delegation almonds: For LLMs, we'd like to get another server in the server room - we gathered a list of specs and found a link to a server that goes for about $3700. On top of that we'll need a GPU for it. colclark: You're buying a new server? almonds: Yes colclark: Isn't that a bit overkill? almonds: Yes. I'd like to float the idea anyway. colclark: Who's the treasurer? rgabriel: So we have about $8k in the primary account, but we have more in various other accounts. almonds: We're thinking boss-baby can be more test, where the other one is more production level - they could also serve different LLM models. We also have an OrangePi in the server room that can do load-balancing/routing. amigdal: Any reason the proxy has to be a separate machine? almonds: Not necessarily, but the OrangePi isn't doing much anyway amigdal: It's an annoying form-factor, and likely not as reliable long-term as would be preferred. nmorgan: So one allocation for the server, and another for the GPU? almonds: About $2000 for ???, so about $6000 total. rgabriel: Notably this is a long-term project - this server would last at least 5 years, maybe 10. colclark: I have two proposals: (1) We can use the current graphics card for the server, and put off buying a second and (2) Buying a fully new server doesn't sound like a good idea - we could put together our own server for a fraction of the cost. jmvidal: I floated this idea - we'd save some money, and it'd be good experience (good HWOps project), but we'd spend about the same amount of money either way. almonds: Thank you. I'm all for these proposals. colclark: What do we want to buy anyway? almonds: There's a link in the LLMs channel on the Mattermost. colclark: I'd suggest doing a cost breakdown/more research before we commit. almonds: I'm down for this - I'd also be willing to spend some of my own money for this. I'd like a production-level server to be ready by the summer. almonds: People interested - please attend either the next HWOps meeting (Fri 17:30) or LLMs meeting (Fri 15:00). Project Reports: nmorgan: Hyades continues almonds: LLMs continues rgabriel: Matrix continues. There's now a reminder-bot. I haven't started postering yet - had to go through some CAC stuff, so I haven't been able to join Lobby 10 yet. aabreu: DormDigest continues. We're creating a feature so that users can edit their events and their start/end times. colclark: AFS continues jmvidal: HWOps continues scj611: Hashicorp Vault is just waiting for a VM. nmorgan: There were some books allocated for that were supposed to arrive a while ago. Did they ever get here? colclark: They haven't gotten here yet. Any feedback from Amazon? nmorgan: xy did the purchase - I wouldn't know anything about that. colclark: Maybe text him about that then. psvenk: Hydrant continues. I've opened a pull request for new CourseRoad colors - if you have strong opinions on this, please look at the pull request before you find out the hard way. Other: aabreu: On cleaning the office - when would you want to do that? innaavo: Yeah, if anyone wants to help clean the office sometime, we could set up a time later, maybe send out a when2meet. alwinfy: We've got some supplies in the monolith. colclark: But the rubbing alcohol is still expired alwinfy: I got new rubbing alcohol. Drink your heart out, colclark. colclark: SIPB elections are sooner than you think. Other Other: rgabriel: Spring break is later than you think. psvenk: President's Day is sooner than you think. psvenk: alwinfy, what's your WPM? alwinfy: Fuck if I know. psvenk: It must be quite good, since these minutes are excellent. innaavo: It must be difficult to keep track of what people are saying and also type in real time. The meeting was adjourned at 19:57. Minutes taken by alwinfy, almonds, amigdal, innaavo and submitted by alwinfy.
