Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2024-03-18 The meeting was called to order at 19:33 by innaavo. In attendance were Student keyholders: alwinfy, innaavo, aabreu, rgabriel, jmvidal, huydai, nmorgan, turino14, psvenk Associate keyholders: almonds Members: scj643, vex, xyn, lkronman, guoj1112 Guests: dshklo, abutalib, jazsolan, Leo Ahluwalia Administrivia: innaavo: I'll start. Can I get an allocation for $92.43 for the pies/various snacks we got at Costco? almonds: (By the way, you can just say $100) huydai: Seconded innaavo: Motion to white-ballot huydai: Seconded [motion passes by white-ballot] rgabriel: $138.08 for the hackathon pizza y'all consumed. almonds: (...You can just say $140...!) innaavo: Seconded. Motion to white-ballot huydai: Seconded jmvidal: There's more pie left, BTW huydai: I've been consuming it! abutalib: Me and my friend are from OpenCode. Over spring break we're doing a Hackathon - mostly for people on campus, though we'll also have online options. It'll take place over Mar 25th-29th 11am-11pm. We have a few projects, and we'd also like people to let make their own projects. ASA messed up and made us unfunded - I was wondering if SIPB was willing to fund us for snacks over that 5-day period? almonds: Can you elaborate on how ASA messed up? abutalib: There was an issue with processing the application in time for OpenCode, we submitted the funding application on time but ASA forgot that we existed and it didn't go through. innaavo: What do you mean by hackathon? abutalib: We have our own OSS projects, and we have other projects we'd like to work on, so we'll be mostly spending those 5 days working on those projects. We'd also like to make a privacy-friendly Piazza alternative and newer frameworks for NodeJS. We also want to welcome people with their own ideas and their own projects - we'd like to have a space to have fun and learn from each other. innaavo: How much money are you looking at? abutalib: I don't know what we're looking at, but we're looking mostly just for snack funding - no foods. alwinfy: We have a cart that we take to go to Target. We have a budget of $100 for snacks weekly, which would be sufficient, but that is for office snacks, not an event. abutalib: In that case, I'd like to allocate about $150? alwinfy: Seconded [motion passes 11-0-3] rgabriel: What is the schedule again? abutalib: It is Monday through Friday 11 am to 11 pm. rgabriel: Wow… [your schedule]'s taking up the entirety of spring break! abutalib: Yeah, that's the plan. We're going to hold it in 2-132. alwinfy: The new sign came in, however the cable seems dead, so motion to buy a new cable for $30. We don't have any RJ12 jacks, they're too old. innaavo: Seconded, motion to white ballot turino14: Seconded [motion passes by white-ballot] psvenk: I wanna talk about the SIPB hackathon. Not many people seemed to show up this time. nmorgan: What do you think caused this? almonds: Midterms? alwinfy: Also, we used "SIPB Social" rather than "Hackathon," and it was the day after Pi Day - people might have been totally stuffed. innaavo: Yeah, I'm for moving away from Hackathon - it's a bit too nerdy. Not that we aren't, but… nmorgan: "Get to know SIPB"? huydai: We should probably nail down the event - do we want it to be a work party, where everyone comes and works on CourseRoad, or like… a board game night? innaavo: We definitely don't want to advertise a "work some more" on a Friday Night. almonds: Can we make posters next time? (I can make posters next time.) innaavo: We could also dormspam earlier - it was 2-3 days early this time, maybe that was too late to plan. jazsolan: I was a bit confused as to what the event was - there wasn't much hacking going on. It seemed more like an info session. nmorgan: We could do something like board games - to have something for them to do once they get here. almonds: I was hacking - but ironically it made me less able to socialize because I was so hyperfocused. huydai: We do have a lot of board games - but we haven't really used them in the last two years. Maybe we could bring those back. jmvidal: I figured out what was wrong with Cortana, by the way! It was the SSD - I unplugged it and replugged it and it started working. Project Reports: jazsolan: I'm with the VR/AR club - I'd like to make an AR navigation app for mapping/navigating around campus. Right now I'm trying to get a MVP by April - I'm hoping to map out everything on the first floor connected to Lobby 7. jazsolan: I've been mostly doing it solo Mondays/Tuesdays 7-8pm in Building 9, I think it's 9-152 - if anyone's interested they're welcome to join. innaavo: Is there anything you'd like SIPB to help you with? jazsolan: From SIPB, mostly the issue of hosting. alwinfy: [explains Scripts/XVM] almonds: You can also talk to one of us after the meeting. vex: SIPB Tor continues, as aforementioned we went to the Internet Exchange, updated Debian, went to the 7th floor and saw the Scripts VM. I got an email from the law clinic asking me to sign on behalf of SIPB for a letter of engagement confirming that we're allowed to advise us. alwinfy: What use-case does this have? What sort of legal threats does this protect us from? vex: No protection - this is mostly to advise us in case law enforcement gets mad at us; we are after all running a Tor exit node. It's not likely anything ever happens, but for the worst case in case something actually does happen. innaavo: Would we like to arrange a meeting with the lawyers to discuss this/have them present on use-cases? Maybe even dormspam about it? almonds: If we're dormspamming, I feel we should inform them that we're inviting extra people. vex: They seem pretty nice about it - rgabriel and I met them. They're also incentivized to talk about this because they're training lawyers. alwinfy: Does this add more liability? vex: Nothing more - we already have some liability due to the Tor exit node. This helps us if anything. aabreu: DormDigest continues almonds: The onboarding for DormDigest continues to improve. huydai: We're also meeting with unsubscribe.mit.edu to figure out how best to continue. almonds: Which we'll schedule after the meeting nmorgan: Hyades continues, we are working on adding documentation tomorrow. alwinfy: SIPB LED continues. As aforementioned, we're blocked on our old shitty cable having broken down, so updates once that gets resolved. almonds: SIPB LLMs continues, meetings on Fridays at 15:00. jmvidal: HWOps continues. Meetings Friday at 17:30. scj643: SIPB Vault still on hold - awaiting machine provisioning. [discussion of SIPB Vault provisioning] innaavo: psvenk, I know you were working on SIPB Twitter. Updates? psvenk: So what happened was we already have an @sipb handle, linked to sipb-twitter@mit.edu. One day I had a harebrained idea to try making a new SIPB account and link it to sipb-office@, and did not think through the implications of that and clicked cancel. TL;DR there is no Twitter account linked to sipb-office@; no need to worry. alwinfy: For people who are new, SIPB's online communication mostly happens on Mattermost. There's an app and you can access it on . There are channels for each project, as well as some general channels like Town Square for general talk and Shopping List for snack requests. Other: innaavo: We have CPW coming up. nmorgan: We have break coming up! psvenk: 2028s are sooner than you think! innaavo: We'll still have a meeting next week. psvenk: The stud will be closed. There's some rule about Cambridge rules about "being a public building." nmorgan: We should clean out the fridge. alwinfy: Shouldn't leave a pie in the fridge for a week. almonds: I haven't seen any emails about this. Do they wait until the last minute to announce it or something? huydai: Might be worth mailing CAC about. scj643: My wedding is sooner than you think. [applause] Other Other: rgabriel: Spring is sooner than you think. It's tomorrow! xyn: Not tomorrow - it's the 21st. xyn: Summer is sooner than you think. The meeting was adjourned at 20:07. Minutes taken by alwinfy, almonds, innaavo and submitted by alwinfy.
