Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2024-10-14


The meeting was called to order at 19:34 by innaavo.

        almonds: The tax forms were updated Sep 23. This is exciting because this happens only once per ten years.
        
        innaavo: Exciting! Have we updated ours?
        
        almonds: I can print the updated copies for us.
        
        innaavo: We have our studybreak/dinner on the 24th! What's the plan?
        
        alwinfy: I think takeout would be easiest
        
        innaavo: We've gone back and forth on this I think
        
        rgabriel: I think dinner would be nice... food's best when fresh

Project Reports:

        xy: Mastodon continues. There was a recent major version upgrade, so that took me a few hours (small things getting fixed). I don't think there are any current students that actively post, so I'm encouraging y'all to check it out! It's very cool, there's lot of nice people - including a lot of alums/recent grads.
        
        alwinfy: Do you want to get a poster together and try pubbing?
        
        xy: We've tried dormspamming, but it hasn't helped much. Everyone here is a lot more likely to join anyway, I think
        
        rgabriel: Matrix continues! We had the first meeting today, meeting Mondays 6:30pm.
        
        almonds: Forgejo continues! I've implemented changes so people can't just use the server as a storage instance. I might write a blog post on the website about it? Maybe poster too.
        
        scj643: Vault remains stalled... we need to get a server for it.
        
        alwinfy: What's the plan so far? Worst case we can just build one ourselves
        
        scj643: Dual power supplies and TPM are the big blockers, still shopping around
        
        scj643: Once we get it all set up, we should get a few new YubiKeys for it, for general use authentication. Maybe even a Yubi HSM if we want to roll our own client certs.
        
        suufi: OpenGrades continues, minus the HTTPS which is still in progress right now because it's a Docker container running on lemon-pepper.

        almonds: HWOps continues - we were putting up the server rack shelves last time, and this Friday we plan on moving the UPSes across the room, which is going to take a lot of hands. Meetings Friday at 17:30, usually, but 17:00 this week because we need the extra time.

        scj643: We now have thumb ports in the room that are 10 gigabit! Would be nice to have it in the SMR...

        xy: Last week, there were a lot of major releases of software - Ubuntu, Python, KDE Plasma. I've updated boss-baby to the newest KDE.
        
        alwinfy: Four-day weekend! Five if you took Friday off. Six if you take Wednesday off too. Don't do this
