Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2025-05-19 The meeting was called to order at 19:36 by psvenk. In attendance were Student keyholders: suufi, psvenk, turino14, innaavo, alwinfy, xy, monicav, rgabriel Associate keyholders: almonds Members: ilyag Guests: '() Administrivia: turino14: I'd like to make an allocation for about $1000 in SSDs for the SMR. psvenk: How much money do we have? innaavo: Just about $2400 ± $100 left. turino14: I'm also considering if we should buy an extended battery model for the UPS; which is $1400. That would drain us of all the budget, but there's no hurry - we can also buy it next semester, and we'd probably like more than one EBM. How do we feel? psvenk: Can we pull down the SSDs to $800/900? Depends on exact budget amount, but I'd like to have about $100 or so left over just so we don't go overbudget. turino14: Yeah innaavo: When turino14 and I talking about this, we had $2450 in the bank; but I want to give ourselves some slack. I'm supportive, since I would prefer to use our entire budget on hardware. psvenk: I want to allocate for both; I just don't want to spend over. Contingent on us not going over. I presume the SSDs can flex? Are they critical? turino14: Well, the semester's mostly over, so we'd mostly be using them next semester. We could order them then. psvenk: When you say $1400, you mean exactly? turino14: I want to say $1440, $1450? psvenk: Subtracting from $2400 with $100 of headroom, that leaves us $860ish. innaavo: I can have exact numbers by next meeting; what we could do is allocate one now, one later. turino14: We could also postpone to next meeting psvenk: People may not be here next meeting. turino14: Motion to allocate $1440.71 for an extended battery model (EBM) for the UPS psvenk: Will that incur more S&H? [discussion of S&H] psvenk: Seconded [motion to allocate $1440.71 for an EBM passes 6-0-1] alwinfy: Empty house today turino14: I imagine hosed by finals psvenk: During the summer, I will still be coming to meetings in-person, but not during August. In August, someone else will have to run it - turino14, will you be here? turino14: Yeah psvenk: You'll probably have to take over. alwinfy: We have at least one graduating senior on the EC psvenk: rgabriel, right? psvenk: We'll have to hold a special election for secretary. I was going to say we should do it in the fall, but we should probably do that now. alwinfy: You're not getting me back in the seat. psvenk: That's my concern! innaavo: What about next week? psvenk: We need quorum next week! The semester's over - we don't have time. innaavo: We could recruit some unsuspecting frosh? [discussion of what to do over summer] ilyag: I'll be here for most of the summer - I'm not as fast a typer, but I can do minutes psvenk: I think what we did last year was just crowdsource. almonds: I'll also be here over the summer. What's needed? psvenk: Just minutes. In the fall we can do the special election. I think it would be prudent to do it then. psvenk: As far as summer meetings are concerned, there'll be a meeting next week; obviously no one should be obliged to come to meetings over the summer, but I'll be there. We'll probably still have EC meetings on the first Mondays of June/July if people want them; I'm ambivalent to them. alwinfy [greeting rgabriel, who just joined]: Hi, we're talking about replacing you rgabriel: Great psvenk: [fills rgabriel in] psvenk: Based on prior precedent, I presume ASA Midway will be on 2025-08-29, a Friday; we should do a meeting before that to put things on the radar, Thursday 2025-08-28. That's still quite a way out, though. turino14: Sounds like a plan innaavo: Since summer's starting, if you have things in the fridge, please take them out if you're leaving. Especially if you're leaving for the summer. Please clean up after yourself in the office. rgabriel: I think there's a soup (colclark's?) that has been there for several months. psvenk: If it's in there for several months, or more than a few weeks, probably throw it out. Project Reports: turino14: HWOps continues. On Friday we went to OC11 and retrieved the netapps from the Econ department. Probably going to spend Wednesday setting those up, plus a server to play with over the summer. Meetings Friday at 17:30, but not continuing into the summer. Wednesday I'll just message the channel when I'm ready to go. almonds: LLMs continues. I made it so that if you're an MIT student, you don't have to be added to a group anymore [to access llms-dev-1]; it's just automatic. ilyag: Ark continues, but we didn't have a meeting. It's about where it was a week ago. suufi: OpenGrades continues. Almost 2900 users, 6.4k total reviews. We'll be pushing out another email about pushing in new grades, along with UA, who might be pushing out funding for it. monicav: SIPB FPGAs continues. We got the USB hub and plugged it in! Unfortunately, even with ordering a particular usb hub that has worked before, uhubctl isn't detecting the hub, and openFPGALoader isn't detecting the FPGA. So remote powercycles are still an issue that we'll have to debug. Other: psvenk: Good luck on finals alwinfy: End of the semester's sooner than you think innaavo: Spend time outside! turino14: Touch grass alwinfy: I've been dying of touch grass disease psvenk: Of touching too much or too little? alwinfy: Hay fever Other Other: suufi: Joe Biden has prostate cancer. alwinfy: I've been getting back into text adventures recently innaavo: Quant recruiting season is starting. rgabriel: Already??? innaavo: But I am not on the competence level of quants. psvenk and alwinfy: You def are alwinfy: I think you overestimate the competence of quants rgabriel: Commencement is sooner than you think The meeting was adjourned at 20:00. Minutes taken by alwinfy, rgabriel and submitted by rgabriel.
