Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2025-06-30 The meeting was called to order at 19:35 by psvenk. In attendance were Student keyholders: psvenk, rgabriel, dtemkin, innaavo Associate keyholders: kenta Members: guoj1112, ilyag Guests: '() Administrivia: psvenk: Today is, as I understand it, the last day of FY25. So yay. Or not yay, depending on your point of view. ilyag: Does that mean there's a new budget? psvenk: The data warehouse is going to be offline tomorrow, according to the VPF website. I believe Jul 2 is the first day that we have our new budget available to us but I can verify with innaavo. psvenk: The namecheap expense that was allocated 1.5 weeks ago, I'll perform that purchase once the fiscal year rolls over. innaavo is that right? innaavo: I think so. psvenk: In other news, ASA Midway is sooner than you think. That will be on Friday, August 29 from 2:30-4:30 pm. The deadline for signing up is Aug 17. dtemkin (in chat): prefrosh will be told it starts at 3. psvenk: So I'll look at that form, and I'll fill it out and let you know if there is anything else we need. It should probably be straightforward, similar to the CPW Midway form. First, as an informal pool, how many of you will be around/available/willing to help out with Midway on Aug 29? guoj1112: I might be able to help. psvenk: I'll put something on Matrix/Mattermost about it, just to gauge how many people we can expect. And preparing for Midway, we should probably get on top of merch at some point given that the fiscal year has now started so we are able to spend money on merch and we should do that so that it arrives before Midway. Also day of planning, we should probably meet in the office day of or day before, but we can talk about closer to the day of. rgabriel: Do we have flyers to give to people? I forgot if we do. psvenk: We had in CPW. I can ask propaganda ministers for the files. I might have access to the files directly. psvenk: We should have flyers, banners, Max, and we should check what type of merch we want. Stickers? T-Shirts? We might not want to give full T-Shirts at midway but it is still a good idea to buy them either way so we can give them to frosh at the beginning of the term. ilyag: What about hats? Are hats too much? innaavo: What about rubber ducks, like little fuzzballs? rgabriel: How would a SIPB themed duck be? For your rubber duck debugging. psvenk: We could do that. kenta (in chat): phone stylus? psvenk: Yeah possible, I don't know what much of a market there is in this day and age. It could be a nice novelty item. ilyag: Floppy disks? psvenk: That might be the hardest of all to procure. Project Reports: guoj1112: ARK continues. I just submitted a pull request and it took a little longer than expected because I needed to do something called type narrowing. The frontend is now a little interactive. I should have switched this to [ajb?] and made it 2 PRs. psvenk: Is this for JSON schemas, or validating JSON? guoj1112: I want to convince TypeScript that the data is the correct type after validating. psvenk: The age-old problem of synchronizing type information across different languages / formats. ilyag: Indeed. Also on ARK we started onboarding 3 new people, and we are continuing to work on the backend. There's nothing truly finished but we started ripping out our langchain dependencies. Langchain has a lot of subdependencies that seem a bit much so we decided to move away from it. We realized that we need to containerize the radicale calendar database sooner rather than later. rgabriel: If you are interested in continuing Matrix (messaging) or Petrock (authentication/Touchstone), let me know. Other: '() Other Other: psvenk: I don't know if I've told the story before but floppy disks reminds me that when I was building my current desktop back in late 2018, I wanted to have a floppy disk drive in it. But it was a modern motherboard with a modern chipset (brand new) and CPU. I wanted to have a floppy disk just for fun. I wanted to buy a floppy disk drive but I realized it had a different connector that doesn't exist on newer motherboards, so I thought of getting an adapter-- dtemkin (in chat): I can get you a floppy drive and a ribbon cable if you need it <3 psvenk: With an adapter?? dtemkin (in chat): yuh psvenk: For real? I might unironically take you up on that offer. dtemkin (in chat): LMAO, text me psvenk: Bet. ilyag: I offered a very old PC from loading docks for free on craigslist. The guy who claimed it offered me a 8" floppy disk. psvenk: Oh 8"? ilyag: Yeah, it's huge. kenta: The 8" floppy disks are from the early 80s. Was it a retro PC from the early 80s? ilyag: No, the retro PC was from the 5" era but this was from way before. guoj1112: July 4th is sooner than you think. psvenk: That is true! Happy 250th independence day (in advance). ilyag: 8" floppy disks were introduced in 1972. innaavo: The midpoint of the year is sooner than you think! I think it's July 2nd. psvenk: It is the 250th time that July 4th is being celebrated as "independence day" because it will have been 249 times since the first celebration. kenta: You don't think the signers on the day of were finally we had this thing written and they celebrated? psvenk: I think that qualifies as a celebration. rgabriel: I think they were 0-indexed. ilyag: I was going to say something about 0-indexed also. rgabriel: Okay, 249, so the 250th anniversary would be next year. The 250th time something of significance is assigned to this day is this year. guoj1112: There was a guoj1112: Actually, I don't have anything to say. The meeting was adjourned at 19:52. Minutes taken and submitted by rgabriel.
