Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 13 July 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:32 by William M. York. In attendance were RK, WMY, J9, ACW, Naha, barmar, GMP, c/, RLL, HGA, DCP. Late were: RDM, JSL, PAE, SEL, CAH, Jay. The minutes of the meeting of 6 July 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. RDM came in during this. Treasurer's Report: Last year's total spending was $114,451.52. Total Multics spending so far this month: $1,125.38 Total 370 spending this year and month: $45.75 There is a problem when we take requisitions from OSP accounts (higher than 80000). We are not allowed to do it anymore, so we will probably have to create a new project for each Coop user who pays by such requisition. Be careful when taking Coop accounts from now on. How should we handle 370 Coop? Someone came in this week and wanted to get a 370 account and pay cash. Jay created a new project (M30001, as we own the entire M30000 series) for her. Chairman's Report: The chairman called around and tried to find FinBoard people this week. None of the people in charge seem to be around this summer. He will try to get hold of Ken Dumas (UAVP). Prof. Drake (6.041) came in today and WMY helped him backup his files. Drake was amazed at the amount of stuff we do. He also took a job application form while he was here. JSL came in during this. JSL told a story about a woman who came to him for help translating an IBM PL/I program for Multics. When he tried to pass the woman on to a Center consultant, he found out that the best they have to offer is Barbara Hughes, who is way over her head when it comes to Multics PL/I, so the center effectively has no PL/I consulting. Sua-der Suen and John Suen recently got married. Office Report: Do we want a subscription to the "Journal of Irreproduceable Results"? Donations should go to an envelope in the cashbox. HGA is getting a subscription to "Science". It will come to the office. Should we renew our "Discover" subscription? Contributions to a different envelope. The office was waxed and the light bulbs were replaced this week. There is a new small but sweet Multics rate chart on the wall. Computer Services: Schiller's minimal Chaos NCP works minimally. We paused for discussion of pornography. StudentEH is the least populated of our projects. There were 105 users on Multics today. Roger Roach thinks that Multics is finally making a profit. Many Emacs improvements were installed this week. Lots of dead bears have been forced onto the streets. Telecommunication Report: The AI Memo documenting the Chaosnet has been released. One will appear in the office soon. CAH tried out the VT640 graphics VT100 this week, but had trouble. It was just a loose cable. Our office VT100 and one of the Student Center VT100's are very out of focus and dim. They should be called in; ask for a new video assembly. PAE came in during this. The SpinWriter should be vacuumed. So should the loft. SEL came in during this, and gave the chairman food. Publications Report: Barmar redid the NUMs this afternoon. They will go to Beane tomorrow. Symbolics may begin printing Lisp Machine Manuals, and sell them for weird amounts of money. R/O Report: DCP will start working on tour planning. CAH came in during this, and told us what he thought of the VT640. Other: The bugs with Honeywell 501 disk drives has been found. The Honeywell 355 FNP is gone. We were supposed to be credited $30 for the Student dir lossage, but the form was lost. Barmar called Fred Richardson this week. He is busy this summer, so he may call us this fall. DCP tried calling people in the Limbo file, but couldn't get hold of anyone. During the meeting, c/ cleaned out the cruft in the Limbo drawer. Applications: Lloyd, Dan - $100 - for finishing text editing (has had $100 so far). He is Course 21 faculty. Moved to give, with the warning that we expect this money to finish the project. Passed. Should we auto applications for staff and alumni? There was a discussion of what people in the MIT community are autoable. RK moved that we only auto people considered by the registrar to be students. CAH also would like to be able to auto staff. RK's motion passed. Of course, SIPB members still cannot be autoed. Total appropriations: $1220 without Coop Autoed: Student: $1120 370: $0 To Meeting: $100, EC: $0, all Student. Coop: $230 Other Other: Naha went to Mary Chung's dim sim brunch this weekend. Naha walked down Newbury Street where The English Room used to be. It still isn't anything. RK proposed a trip to Montreal either the weekend of 8/8 or 8/15. JPT has his ringnet FTP working at the ArcMac. Alan went to Philadelphia last week, but he is back. We discussed what inactive members should be taken off SIPBADMIN. Jay came in during this. Eric Ostrom told DCP that the misligned dashes in the X1200 output are designed in. "A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" seems to still be heard on Mondays. Many people burned out this week listening to tapes of it. There are several articles about RMF on the board. The meeting was adjourned at 21:20. Minutes taken and submitted by Barry Margolin.
