Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 14 December 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:31 by Alan Bawden. In attendance were Alan, barmar, GMP, RK, Naha, DCP, CAH, WMY, JSL, WER, Jay, BIM, Gill Pratt. Late were: Lai, J9, JR, HDT. The minutes of the meeting of 7 December 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. J9, Lai came in during this. Treasurer's Report: We spent lots of money last week, including a day with $987 (including SIPB/SIPBADMIN). The SpinWriter kickback was also twice as high as the previous high. MTD: Multics $8134 370 $160 Multics allocated and not spent: $20,000. The requisition for the Z19's was sent on its way. Jay had originally ordered it from the wrong people, so it came back. TTY43 paper was ordered, and LA120 paper was gotten. There seems to be some problem with our long-distance phone bills. Chairman's Report: WMY and WER went up to see Chuck Libby last week about whether we could purchase modems and have them amortized. However, he told us that when we make plans to do work off our operating expenses budget (13608), as in installing new datasets, we have to submit proposals (several month's worth of red tape). They also went over problems with our long-distance phone call budget. WMY and WER spoke to Wes Burner today, and he said that we should try to keep from spending things off our operating expenses budget, and use our capital expenditures budget (the $20K) as much as possible, perhaps by shuffling things between the two budgets. We should start writing proposals for next year's operating expenses budget, including terminal contracts. It looks like Hulsizer wants to hold a CCE meeting on the 23rd. Unfortunately, WMY will be out of town at that time. The DSA seems to have invited us to their luncheons in January because because we are good examples (as in "we wrote an Annual Report"). Jay and Lucky (exiting LSC chairman) are trying to come up with methods of improving LSC's image. Office Report: The office is a GDF pigsty. Jay is going to get rid of old spending log sheets. The ice cream sandwiches are MG's. A white mug was broken a few days ago. The office was an incredible mess this morning. When you read a book, put it back on the shelf! (If you are cleaning up, DON'T just pile things in the cruft bin.) There are new real phone books in the office. Computer Services: CAH thought that SIPB_print's password had been changed, but it hadn't. We gave someone from EECS a box of LA36 paper. Clean up your act in NBDD. We are very low on storage there. The SIPBOLC project has been created. RKScott is the only one on the project and Dorothy Corbett is the project administrator. RK Scott will be writing a memo on its use. bound_sipb_maint_ is being audited. SIPB.info will be put on CMS. JIS may have a method of transfering files from CMS to Multics and then backing them up. barmar will try to install teach_emacs in IML. barmar has installed a link to bound_script_ in the SIPB PL. This is an easy way to produce terminal session script files. Should we document this in the NUMS, or should we document audit? CAH has an exec_com that makes it easy to use audit. Telecommunications Report: Next House has a Teleray. Next House needs to improve their terminal room. The phone line there is now class F. Gill told us about a piece of off-the-shelf hardware that is useful for PDP-11 terminal concentrators. It is called TC-3, and they use it at Bell Labs. We have to order four wire-pairs from the Student Center to each of the the west campus dorms. The situation of running wires under Mass. Ave. is still not understood. We also should get wires to East Campus and Senior House. WER will look into the East Campus situationa and cost. Motion to authorize $2000 for this wiring (if it is more, another meeting will be required). Someone should also find out which is better for the east side: coming from bldg 39 or bldg 8. The motion passed. JR came in sometime, but the secretary just realized it. The office VT100 is a Teleray. Chi Phi claims they already paid us. The dorms should be told to find room for all the new terminals we are putting in. McCormick is happy with a video terminal. What is the ratio of use of dorm terminals between Multics and other computers? Perhaps this kind of information should be taken into account in wiring up dorms. WER showed us the orange book, which records living group telecommunications information. It is absolutely up-to-date. If you find misinformation, write WER a note; don't update it yourself. What is the starting price for our Telerays? WMY suggests $500. WMY moved that we set a floor price of $300. What is the delivery time on the Z19's? Someone should find out the PO number so we can call the order in to Heath. Motion passed. WMY read Shakespeare. Publications Report: TOPS-20 LISP Notes should go to Beane. Could we leave our master copies at Beane? Alan doesn't think so. Only get xerox copies of manuals if getting under 100 copies. IAP Report: We will be using EECS for the LISP Course. The LISP Course will be in 6-120, not 54-100. DLW will be the sole lecturer of the LISP Course. The people in the office got alot of exercise using barmar's meal ticket scheme. Do not touch the money. Do not let a ticket out without a $5 deposit for it. Instructions are on the blackboard. Alan may punt the programming contest, as he is over-subscribed and ACW isn't much interested. Other: People are coming in now for next term allocation. How do we handle the fact that people's cutoffs are getting adjusted to their spending on January 1st? You should look in the status folders to find out the spending and allocate accordingly. When people apply for just text editing, find out what they are editing. Mike Jordan is leaving CISL for Tandem. CISL is looking real hard for Multics hackers. If you are or have graduated or dropped out, keep them in mind. WMY's name is climbing up the employee number list, which is loosely based on employment date. Applications: Nahabedian, Mark - WARNING - dprinted his thesis proposal from his SIPBADMIN account. Menaka, Alexandro - let Tou.Student use his account. Kerwin, Colin J. - $40 by EC - to fix up his paper. Roberts, Bill - $50 - wants to compile statistics for Fathers for Equal Justice. Rejected, as he is not an MIT student or employee and the organization is not MIT-affiliated. There are many autoed applications, so they will be read later. Total appropriations: $1395 without Coop Autoed: Student/17S03: $1345 (average $31.28/application) 370: $10 To Meeting: $0, EC: $80, all Student. Coop: $46.60 Other Other: The people at Grenoble cancelled BIM's LISP Course. There was a Messiah Sing on Friday. barmar got a sore throat. "Joe MacBeth" was on TV Thursday night. WMY liked it, Naha didn't. Honeywell may actually employ WMY soon. Several high-level management people are coming to CISL's staff meeting tomorrow. There is some managerial mucking around going on. J9 gave our number to Waltham Industrial Labs, who is chrome plating parts of her tandem. Take a message. J9 bought another spinning wheel. She also has a spinning wheel book, from which she determined that the one she bought is very old. She called the author about this, and he has over 50 spinning wheels of his own. The DUSP lecture by Paul Robeson has been cancelled. RK is planning to go skiing in NH this weekend. See him. Leslie Kurtzberg was hit by a van last week while riding a bike. She is in Mt Auburn Hospital with some fractures. She would probably appreciate visitors in small numbers. Hsing-Hsing has invited us for a New Year's Dinner in January. Even commons eaters and Palter should come. The meeting was adjourned at 21:31. Minutes taken and submitted by Barry Margolin.
