Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of Labor Day, 6 September 1982 in 39-530 Attending were: barmar, BCN, c/, CBF, DCP, GMP, PLJ, RDZ, RK, RLL, WER, and many freshpeople. Late were: Alan, JIS, HDT, naha, Gill, and Jay. Meeting called to order at 19:36 PM. Minutes of the meeting of 30 August 1982 were read and accepted as corrected. CBF threw keys across the table to barmar during the reading. More freshpeople entered. 19:48- The freshperson sign-up sheet was announced again. 19:49- A speech by WER on the SIPB (what we are, what we do, etc.). I. Treasurer's Report Jay's stats presented by JR and delivered by GMP: A check from FinBoard of $1400 to cover the cost of publications will be received this week. Aug 1982 spending was $5300 or $1800 above last year's. YTD spending is $1350 above last year's. One user (Steve Potter) has already spent $300. RLL asked when the last full backup and cleanup was done of our accounts. It was last done in late May 1982. We'll discuss when we should do another one during the next SIPB meeting. Steve reported that there may be a net loss of money in the cash box. Jay and JR should look into this. (20:00) Barmar thinks that we should decide whether to fund student enrollment in IPS courses at $30 - $40 per course. JIS says the charges have increased because MIT has mandated that IPS must support itself. He thinks that we should continue to fund students in this activity. Explanation of IPS := ARCS + System Programming Group + Operations + (Business := User Accounts + ...) + ... by JIS. CBF thinks that students will have an incentive to do work for the courses if they have to pay part of the costs themselves. Barmar needs to know what to tell R. K. Scott (Dorothy Corbett is on vacation) tomorrow morning if a student should try to register for an IPS course. ====> Motion to pay for all but $10.00 for each student who takes a FALL IPS course. Seconded. *Motion passes* Barmar will talk with R. K. Scott. (20:33) Gill entered. II. Chairman's Report WER is back. Her thesis may be done. c/ will have resigned from the Executive Committee as of Registration Day, 8 September 1982, about 17:00 when she will no longer be a student. Lai will send out notices of election for a position in the Executive Committee. Some freshpeople left. WMY described the types of membership. Jay entered at 20:16. RDZ explained how to become a member. III. Office Report This is not the office. Old member's office drawers will be cleaned out. Something should be done about Elder's card decks. CBF suggested that we read them in to Multics and mail them to him. Books should be shelved rather than placed in the magazine bin. Office hours. We are officially open between 13:00 and 17:00. Members should sign up for office hours. CBF discussed the application and application approval processes. The Office Manual is being revised. New members should read it. Gill showed off a computer equipment catalog in French. {User interrupt. Smith, David. For: 1) "typesetting" text for a small monthly newsletter (~3 pages/month). No other sources of funding. 2) Coursework for 21.009 (probably ~20 pages). ====> Motion to give $75. *Passes*.} IV. Computer Services GMP described computer services (Multics, etc.) Jamal Nasir who wanted JCF time says that JCF's temporary solution is to give him in an account his own name and then switch it around when we get our account numbers so that we get billed. Jay says that this is against the rules and we should have nothing to do with it. The Xerox 9700 screwed up the printing of the NETS. User Accounts got an official grump from E19 about our account numbers, says JIS. WMY asked whether we should release the new formatting tools without a cancel command. V. Telecommunications WER explained telecommunications. CBF asked who wanted Stud Center cabinet keys. Gill doesn't have keys to the office yet. He also wants Stud Center cabinet keys. BCN asked whether it would be alright to have a glass wall in the Next House terminal room. How accessible is the MacGregor terminal room? Gill reports that the Senior House Vadic has been installed. Jay reports that Line 3 in the Stud Center didn't work when he tried to connect the Z-19 from the R/O Center. The R/O Center's AJ is in the office. RDZ got a call from the phone company saying that the Registrar wants to use our phone lines in DuPont. Somebody should see that they aren't charged installation fees. A freshman asked why Baker is the only dormitory without a terminal. They need a terminal room and a person to be responsible for the equipment. MacGregor's LA36 has been reputed to slow down and then come to a stop when printing. The Senior House 103 still has not been called in. VI. Publications Report Steve is making a slide for next week's LSC movies. Steve and JIS made a drop poster for the computer tour. CBF and JIS dropped it. The Institute was postered by BCN, Steve, and CBF. Organizations with fascist bulletin boards received special invitations to the tour. About 100 - 120 people are expected for the tour. WER has almost finished revising the NUMS and NETS. Computer Tour handouts should be sent to Beane's early tomorrow. Lisp notes. The book wholesaler who attempted to order Lisp notes from us was asked to do so by Honeywell according to Jay. VIII. Annual-Report Report It's done except for a cover -- which will be a picture of the nose cone from Group Velocity. WMY, CBF, RK, and barmar got the stats stuff working. A formatted copy is on the board and should be proofread. The Annual Report should mention funding of IPS courses. IX. R / O Report All the equipment from the R/O Center has been returned. Jay has asked Dean Heines to write us a thank-you letter. The Computer Tour is tomorrow. Members should be at 6-120 at 19:00. So far, WER has spent $37.00 for munchies, excluding the vegetables that TZS will procure. R/O is almost over. X. Other Jay talked with Chris Tavares who will be working with Stratus Computer. XI. Applications Notable: The JCF application of Jamal Nasir. There was a pink-pad note to give more money for a Co-op application for a Martinez. A new application should have been filled out. (Jay later found the application) Processed applications should be placed in the IN folder. (21:28) Barmar explained Co-op accounts. An ECS user thought he had to pay for his ECS usage. Surcharge info as reported by JIS: Personal student accounts will not be surcharged. Student activity accounts will be surcharged. Therefore student activity Co-op accounts might be removed sometime. Chuck's board does scroll regions three times as fast on a procesor that is twice as slow. Gill gave a soap box so that we may remember the SIPB summer of 1982 flames. Ken's changed their menus so that there are no longer any half-price specials. Douglas Hofstadter mentioned a "Bernie Weinreb" in his September 1982 Scientific American Mathematical Games article. Incidentally, it's a palindrome. Gill discussed voice commands to an electronic mouse. The mouse will be displayed at Disney World's EPCOT. Meeting was adjourned at 21:46.
